Big burl bowl

Mike Schwing from Md.

>This is a large (16" diameter) maple burl bowl. It is pretty neat for its rarity, I don't recall seeing more than one or two maple burl bowls this large. I thought it would be more dramatic somehow than it is, even though I think it is well turned and finished, and looks pretty good photographed. It was wet turned to finish thickness, an even 3/16" throughout, and BOY was it flexible on the lathe. I used a lot more 80 grit sandpaper than I would normally on a bowl this size as finishing cuts were unproductive.

Finished with 2 coats of Daly's tung oil and buffed on wheels to a nice sheen.

No bottom treatment on this one as I ran out of depth, misjudged how deeply I took the interior.

Comments welcomed, and thanks for looking.

>Very pretty. 3/16"? On a bowl that large? Have your bugs bitten you?

Seriously though, I like it. Is there a market for bowls that size??

>Impressive Mike! I'd need a new dinning room table with a bowl that size though :)

>Nice bowl Mike. That is a large burl bowl.

You mention wet turned to final thickness. The bowl does not see to have warped, is this your experience with maple burl?

I will be final turning a yellow birch bowl this week that I rough turned last fall and that one moved a lot while drying. I just got three nice maple burls from a friend Saturday and am anxious to put them on the sawmill and cut them into blanks.

>Thanks George. It warped just a little bit, but nothing like you would expect with a normal face/cross grain type turning. You can probably expect similar results with your burl, but if there is any straight grain within, expect some more distortion.

>Thanks Mike, the yellow birch burl was more undulated and therefore warped more.

>Mike, this is so "Old School" really not up to your standards of inovation. Falling back on beautiful wood selection, clasic form, and flawless finish....Harumpf.

Nice work man.

>Its on the way. And it'll be big enough that it will have a serious appetite for wood, so watch out!

Maybe that is what I feel is lacking in this, nothing "mine".

From our emails, you know I'm working on a quite ambitious piece. It should more than make up for lack of imagination in this one. The only things I've ever built that have taken as much time as this were boats, and this is a single piece of wood!
