New Stubby 750

Barry Turner

>I spent several hours in the shop today getting acquainted with my new Stubby 750. I turned a small hollow vessel from maple burl. It's about 9" in diameter and about 8" tall. It was hollowed through a small 1 1/14" opening. The burl was dry making the hollowing more difficult.

The Stubby performed flawlessly throughout the day. It is so smooth! I closed my eyes and placed my hand on the headstock with the machine running at about 1000 rpm at the time, with a not-quite-balanced blank. Had it not been for the very low motor and belt noise, I would not have been able to tell if the lathe was running. Absolutely no vibration! Very few things in life work this well. (Please forgive my blathering on and on!)

I got so enthralled, my wife had to come get me for supper. (I didn't stop at all for lunch!) This could be bigger than low-carb diets.

Ahhhhhhhh..........this is gonna to be fun!

>I know what you mean. I felt the same (and still do) when I recently bought my poor man's Stubby--a Powermatic. It's still amazing when I set a full cup of coffee on the head stock and it just sits there with the lathe running. With my Delta, it would be on the floor the second I threw the switch.

Have fun. The Stubby was my first choice, the pocket book just dictated otherwise.

>I looked at the PM 3520A pretty closely, too. It was a tough choice, in terms of value. The Stubby comes out on top (IMHO), but I'm not so sure it ought to be by a 2 to 1 margin, (2 PM's or 1 Stubby). The PM has many of the very same qualities that made me buy a Stubby. Just not all of them.

Have fun and I know how your feeling!!

>Nooooooooo..........I probably won't stop going to Woodcraft.........or stroking the "Big White One" while I'm there. It just really hard not to stop and pay homage to quality worksmanship and design.......even if it's not your favorite brand. It was a tough choice!
