Help identifying wood species

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>I picked this up on the side of the road on my way home tonight. There are about 10 of these log sections, all between 10 and 14" diameter and 1 to 3 feet long.

Looks like the tree and the power lines were having a territorial spat. The power company won.

So what did I pick up?

All of my turning blanks so far have been purchased from a yard. These one is kinda orange yellow so I'm at a loss. And now I have to borrow the neighbor's chainsaw.

Is this what fresh cherry looks like?

Can anyone clue me in?

Thanks,

Sandor (eager to let the chips fly)

>Looks like red maple to me. The orange color is from the moisture bleeding out.

>Hi Sandor

the wood color and amount of sapwood does make me think of apple, bark looks more like hawthorn or maple, black cherry does not have that much sap wood compared to heartwood, not around here anyway, and the bark is more flakey, so I hold it between maple or hawthorn, so make it round and hollow it out, should be fun,

Have fun and take care

Red Maple....

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>OK so I roughed out a blank using handsaws and a hatchet and wedges, Bandsawed it to a 8" diameter chunk, attached it to a faceplate and learned a few things;

First: My lathe is WAYYYY TOOO SMALLLLLL and whimpy for this kind of work (Old craftsman 9" hobby lathe mounted to a wall mounted workbench.)

Second: The walls in my shap are flimsy.

Third: Wet wood is messy.

So it looks like the wood is soft maple. I have the book "Understanding wood", and the closest match to the cross section cell structure is Red Maple, then Hard Maple. The orange color was just at the cut surface, it is white inside. I also checked The Peterson's field guide and the bark looks like the Red Maple it has pictured. I know one thing, its not Cherry.

Thanks for the help,

Sandor
