Keeping a faceshield clean?

Keeping a faceshield clean?

Mark Kauder, Phenix City, AL

>I am slowly starting to use a faceshield more and more (don't bug me about it - it is not the point of this thread). My big problem is that when I do grab it to use it, it usually got dust all over the lens. I am less likely to use it for a 2 minute turning session, if it takes me 3 minutes to blow/wipe it off (only exaggerating a little).

Even though I use my DC religiously, my shop gets a thin layer of dust everywhere - especially this time of the year when the shop is closed up, and the exhaust fan is not running.

Any suggestions would help.

>wipe it down with a dryer sheet. It will remove the static electricity and clean it off. Glad to hear you are using the face shield, wouldn't want to mess up that beautiful mug :).

I'm with you. I spend more time cleaning the thing than wearing it. Don't use new dryer sheets they will scratch some plastics. Used dryer sheets work fine to remove static and sometimes help the fogging. I never seem to have a rag around when I pick up the mask so it's always dirty and I'm trying to wipe it on my pants or something.

>Hang a soft cloth rag with it that has no other purpose but wiping off the shield. When you go to put it on, you take the face shield off the hook, then take the rag off the hook, wipe the faceshield, shake the rag, put it back on the hook. It becomes second nature and takes only a few seconds each time. I might try the dryer sheet idea also. I have been roughing some very dry beams lately and sometimes the shield gets dirty enough to bug me during a session.

>My shop is in my basement with exposed joists. If I store my mask on a nail up high on the ceiling joist (on the distal side away from the lathe) that the dust accumulation between uses is minimal.

Works for me but you milage may vary.

>Same here. I keep mine covered. When I move and have more space, I will build a box for it that I can hang on the wall. I think I will have the top and front as one piece, with a hinge on the back.

>That is exactly what I do with my face shield

For my Triton, I store the helmet in the box when not in use.

>Try Pledge not the citrus one just the old plain Pledge. Not only keeps the static down but will also fill in the scratches so they do not show.

>Does Pledge keep CA from sticking to the sheild?

Scratches that don't show? Hmmm? Isn't that like cutting splinters off even with the skin so no one will notice them?

Make sure the dryer sheet has been used

>in the dryer, i.e. not a new one or it will smear.

It works sometimes and not others. Maybe brand specific?

Two words...

>Compressed Air.

5 seconds and mine is clean. Also, you might want to get in the habit of cleaning off the gunk before putting it away. That way all you have is dust to blow off.

>I don't usually put CA on my face :<)). Yes it does to a point. The refraction of Pledge is apparently close to that of plastic. The scratches are there but the Pledge fills in and you can't see tham as badly. This trick was suggested to me by a fellow who makes boat covers and stuff. Works wonders on my boat. Try it. polish after application and the static is gone for a bit.

>Mark- I have 2 better words- Armor All. Lightly mist a clean cotton cloth(like an old T shirt)and let it soak in for a few seconds before use, then keep it in a clean ZipLock bag. Reduces static charge, cleans and fills scratches as well. Works much better than wax products like Pledge and has a O refractive index- I've used it on camera lenses for years after learning the trick from an old camera repairman. Even CA won't stick quite as well if you start with a clean lens.

>Being too cheap to afford the head gear part, I just CA a replacement lense for the face sheild to my face. I won't be using the Pledge. My face shield would fall off.
