Are woodworkers the most generous people alive?

RK Kelly, WV

>I spent this week in Atlanta, visiting my father-in-law and my godson's family. Tim (pa-in-law) and i spent all day Tuesday goofing off in all the right places - Highland Hardware, Woodcraft, and Atlanta Wood Products. On the way home, we stopped by Nick Cook's shop in Marietta. I'd never met Nick before but had read his articles in the AAW Journal and emailed him about the collet chuck he sells.

To get to the point, he stopped what he was doing (which was making a living) and chatted with us for probably half an hour. He showed us some pepper mills, bottle stoppers, bar stools and other stuff he was working on. He struck me in much the same way as Bill Grumbine and Charlie Brown and so many other woodworkers i've had the pleasure to meet or correspond with - gracious, friendly, and very willing to help someone who knows less than they do. Growing up in the world of fisherman and birdhunters, i'm much more used to people not sharing their secrets.

Hats off to Nick, Bill, Charlie and all those like them who help the rest of us find our way.

Peace,

kevin

>Kevin,

Sorry I missed you when in Atlanta....tied up in zoning meetings...a fate worse than death.

You are right about Nick in particular. I have never experienced such generosity of time and energy toward a student. A day with Nick is worth a lot. HOpe I get to meet you next time. Let me know when you might be coming.

Blessings,

David Galloway

>I've found they are too. With their time, sometimes wood, and always their opinion.

>I'll second that. I was, and continue to be, totally blown away by the generosity of other turners, and how they treat each other.

I had a visit this past fall from 2 well known turners. They BOTH brought pieces of their work for my collection, and one of them dragged a chunk of fresh cut mahogany all the way from St. John with her. I was absolutely astounded, and rushed to find something suitable to give in return. It seemed that for them this was simply how things were done, and I was blown away. I've been trying to act as kind towards my fellow woodturners, but I'm not really that nice of a guy by default. I swear woodturning is making me nicer.

>Kevin - You must be fishing in the worng place. It has been my experience that fishermen are some of the most generous people that I know, rivaled only by woodworkers.

If you ever get up to WI, I will show you where the walleye and muskie live.

Yes they are

Doug J Crawfordsville, IN

>From personal experieance, woodworkers are the most generous. Every woodworker I have ever met is willing to give up time, tips, technique, wood, and on several occasions even tools (had a person buy and send me a new bowl gouge unexpectedly).
