Jet 1442 Speed question

Dennis Taylor

>Just got the lathe in October, and when I now turn the lever to 2000 or 3000 rpm, I can stop the lathe with my hand, the lower speeds down seem to work, and the belt tight, but when I get to the 2 upper ranges, belt seems sloppy and I can grab the handwheel and stop the spindle from turning, the belt continues on, I don't see any adjustment on the belt to tension anything?..anyone else have these problems?...Dennis

>I'm thinking the the pulley is getting stuck and not closing all the way.

Clean the shaft on the motor with brake cleaner.

Or if you can clean the shaft with mineral spirits by taking apart the reeves pulley.

>Hi Dennis,

I just got my Jet 1442 in January. I'm reading this at work but when I get home tonight I'll check to see if mine does the same thing. If so I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

If you do find the problem/solution, please post it as I'm sure the info would be useful.

I bought my 1442 last Feb. & just started noticing a "knocking" sound a couple of days ago. I thought the belt must be coming apart, so I took the cover off to see what was going on. It turned out one of the set screws in the spindle pulley had worked loose and was striking the headstock casting. When I checked, the other set screw in the spindle pulley was slightly loose also, as were both set screws in the motor pulley.

I noticed when the speed is above the 1900RPM setting, my belt was very loose--either the belt had stretched or was too long to start with. I had never used those speeds until I began turning pens recently. I did notice that the lathe seemed to slow down when I went to the very highest setting when "exercising" the variable speed control without anything mounted on the spindle even when brand new. The belt measures .370 in. wide, so it isn't just wear.

I haven't contacted Jet service yet,but I am sure they will be happy to send a replacement belt as their service is great. I may just try a link belt when I replace mine.

Don't forget to check those set screws when you have the cover off! Probably more than you wanted to know, but I hope this helps.

>I checked mine last night and it does the same thing. Again, I just got it in January so wear on the belt is not the issue. I'm thinking the belt is too long to begin with so getting a replacement belt from Jet will probably not solve the problem since they're just gonna send you the same one.

Can a link belt be used with the reeves drive?

been on the phone with Jet today!`

>I have contacted a fellow at there tech support, and he recommends that the lathe be taken to a service center, what they are telling me to do is this:..remove the handwheel, and the pulleys, pull out the spindle shaft and check for damage/burrs/rolled up metal from a burr/ ...hone smooth and reassemble...there first recommendation was to clean the headstock assembly with wd40, that didn't fix my problem...I agree with the knocking noise around about 1900rpm's, and my belt is so loose I could slide it off the pulley...I am waiting a return call from Jet...my understanding is that you cannot use a link belt on a reeves pulley...NOT SURE WHY...read that on the forum before...I enjoy the 1442 lathe, but I wonder if it is going to be a maintenance issue for the rest of my life...I stepped up from the mini, only a hobby turner, but I haven't logged a lot of hours, probably have only turned 2 bowls and maybe 3 platters, and 20 xmas ornaments on mine, so I don't have a lot of usage...My concern level is pretty high right now..they make it sound as if, this is a pretty common problem with the lathe developing a burr over time, so it could occur again...the repair would be to pull apart, hone, clean assemble and test...I am not the mechanic, so I am waiting on a call...Dennis....

>1.--If I understand Jet's "fix" correctly, they are recommending you polish/smooth the spindle where the large pulley slides. That doesn't make sense to me. The way the variable speed works, the control lever is attached to the spindle pulley & when the speed is increased, the moveable flange is moved to make the gap between flanges wider, in effect making the spindle pulley act as a smaller pulley. The spring-loaded flange on the motor pulley should bring those flanges closer together to take up the slack, which makes it act like a larger pulley. The only way the belt would become loose is if the spring-loaded flange on the motor pulley does not move closer the way it should.

On my 1442 the motor pulley moves together as close as it can and the belt is running as far out as it can. The spindle pulley is spread as it should be and the belt is loose. The ONLY WAY that can happen is to have a belt that is TOO LONG!!

2.--The knocking noise on mine was cured when the set screw was tightened to eliminate contact with the headstock casting. If all 4 set screws in both pulleys are tight, you may be hearing the belt slapping against something when it is at the higher speed settings and the belt is loose.

3.--Don't know what the facts are with link belts. I have read on this forum as well as others that it will work and also that it won't. I think that it is worth a try for me since changing belts sounds like a hassle.

Good luck and please keep us posted if you have any breakthroughs.

I woke up at 3:00A.M. this morning thinking--Duh!!--maybe the belt is not too long the motor and spindle pulleys are too close to each other-maybe there is an adustment. So back to the shop, off with the cover. The only way to adust it is to shim between the motor mount and the headstock casting with washers. However it appears if you shim enough to get the belt tight at the two settings above 1900 RPM the lathe will not slow down as much at the low settings. So basically you have your choice--you can set it to run as slow as possible which will limit the top speed or you can set it to run as fast as possible which will limit the lowest.

still waiting

>No response today from Jet, got a friend that is a machinist stopping by Sunday to take a look at the problem, I will post what he thinks ... I think the problem is the pulleys are not opening enough to let the belt get tension...I will check the set screws, and I will check the spring on the motor end, maybe it is gunked up and not tightening/loosing properly...Dennis

the outcome from a friend

Dennis Taylor

>Well my friend took a look at my lathe, here seems to be the outcome: we pulled the pulley from the motor shaft and it had a nasty burr on it, noticed before removal that the belt seemed out of alignment, so tried to shim it up with washers. It still doesn't run in the higher speed ranges, and it is sluggish in the lower speeds, seems to be about a 1in of play in the belt at the 3000rpm's..he thinks the belt is to large, going to find out about replacement belt and go from there...Dennis

Tug Fork Bob

>Hey Dennis,

I noticed on my 1442 that the belt didn't go clear out to the largest dia. on the motor pulley at the 2 highest speed settings. However the pulley flanges did not go all the way together the way they should. I was able to loosen set screws on the motor pulley and move the fixed side of the pulley about 1/16" further away from the motor. I also moved the fixed (handwheel) side of the spindle pulley about 1/16" away from the handwheel. The belt is now tight on all but the highest setting where before it was loose on both of the two highest settings.

Also as I mentioned before, you could shim between the headstock casting and the motor to tighten the belt.

>I have appx. a inch of play in the belt on the 2000rpm setting, and just over a inch on the 3000rpm speed setting...We pulled the pulley from the motor and there was a large burr there, cleaned that up, but didn't help...Jet says the belt needs to be replaced, and they are shipping a new one, is that the problem?...I doubt it!..but that is there next idea...I asked about using the link belts and they don't know if they will work or not...We shimmed the motor plate on the back side, and that is the play with it shimmed with 3 washers...?....Dennis
