Looked for nuts-Found nuts *LINK*

>Yesterday I posted asking for sources for 1 1/4 X 8 tpi nuts to use in making faceplates. Several people suggested McMaster. At about 1:30 pm yesterday afternoon I ordered 10 of them online from McMaster. At 5:30 pm today they arrived via UPS. This wasn't a special shipping request but standard $5.00 ground shipping.

In my book, 28 hours from online order to arrival at my door via UPS standard ground is pretty darn fantastic! So here's an endorsement for McMaster and UPS as well!

By the way if your looking for nuts, these are great, deep enough to seat on the spindle.

>Have them welded to a flat steel disc. Drtill screw/bolt holes in the disc. Make sure the welder welds the nut in such a way that the whole thing runs true or have a machinist true it. You could also attach a hardwood faceplate to the metal discs and true that. I get my steel "discs" brom a scrap bin at a local fabrication company.

Re: I've made about ten of them.

>At the same time I ordered the nuts from Mc-Master Carr, I also ordered flat washers from them. The ones I used are 4" in diameter and 1/2" thick with a center hole about 1 5/16". I made a welding fixture from hard maple which holds the nut and washer in proper alignment until I can get them tacked together. The small heat generated in the tacking won't harm the maple if I get the steel removed quickly enough. I finish weld the assembly separate from the fixture.

I have found that a couple of the nuts were tapped on an axis which wasn't square to the face of the nut, so I make it a practice to true both faces of the nut on the lathe's spindle before I weld the faceplate. This eliminates almost all of the wobble which will occur if it isn't done. Also, my PM4224 has a short section of the spindle between the shoulder and the set screw groove which is full 1 1/4" diameter and unthreaded. Unless the nut is relieved, the first thread of the nut will bugger this area of the spindle. The solution is to first install a thick washer before screwing on the nut, (rather unelegant), or do as I do and undercut the threads on one side of the nut while it is having the faces trued prior to welding.
