hanging sandpaper

>I'm trying to get my new shop working. I don't know what to do with my sandpaper. I've moved my lathe about 5 feet from any wall to give me more room to work and to make clean up easier. I have a garage door that will open above the lathe so I may not be able to hand anything there. Where do you put your sandpaper. I'm thinking about some sort of fake wall on the outboard side of the lathe. My tool cabinet that holds my chucks and stuff is already full so I can't use that.

I'm still working on where to put the turning tools but I'm thinking about building a Stair stepped sort of shelf around my tool box with holes for the tools.

>Hi John

My shop is undergoing some major change as I seek to shoehorn everything in and still retain the ability to open two sets of doors in nice weather. One of the things I have been working on is how to store my turning tools close to the lathe, especially since it is right next to one of those sets of doors. I am working on a design for some cabinets where the doors will do a double duty. On the one hand most of the stuff inside will be covered from shavings and dust, but I am planning on slab doors so that things may be hung from the doors themselves.

Right now along the one wall, I have a tool rack with a dowel across the bottom, and I keep rolls of sandpaper there. It gets a little dusty if I am not using a particulat grit for a while, but it might be a start for you. Think toilet paper holder and you get the idea.

>Just last night I came up with something that may work for you.

I like using the 9x11 sheets of cloth backed sandpaper. In my small shop space is at a premium so I devised a way to hang hanging files with various grits of sandpaper on the wall. I don't see why you couldn't adapt this to the side of a lathe.

I took two strips of pine 1/2" x 1" and drilled corresponding holes along the length of both pieces. I used a 10MM drill bit because it was handy. I then attached both strips to the wall 11 3/4" apart (the width of my hanging files). Now I can store my sandpaper sheets in hanging files and take up a minimum of space.

Bill's idea of the dowel and TP rolls could work along side for rolled sandpaper.

>I have two hangar straps suspended from the ceiling about 6' from my lathe, though the lowest hole of the straps I inserted a length of 1/2" pipe, at either end I attached a pipe flange, this prevents the pipe from falling out of the straps. On the pipe are my rolls of sand paper in order of grit. The rolls are about 7' to 7 1/2' feet from the floor (I'm tall), the ceiling is 10'. AT the end of each roll I have a small spring clamp attached to the paper, this keeps the end of each roll hanging downward neatly. I simply pull a few inches down and lop it off with scissors. In a cabinet that I made and hung, to the rear of my lathe on the lowest shelf I made dividers of lauan for openings about 2" wide. In each of this 2" wide slots which are about 12" deep and 12" tall I have sheets of sandpaper in order of grit. Both are within easy reach, stored neatly and easy to get at the grit that's needed, no rooting around.

That's exactly the problem I have with both tools and sandpaper. I have a 2 car garage and really don't want to block off the doors. I like turning in the open air during the good weather.

I'm thinking about hanging some 2x4's below the garage door rails to hold rolls of sandpaper and also my calipers and dividers. I haven't figured out what to do with the sanding discs.

do you have trouble with the files filling up with wood shavings? I could put a hinged lid on top to keep the shavings out.

I can't hang the straps down because I want to be able to open the garage door. If the 2x4's hanging down work I'll put a piece of pipe on to hang the sandpaper rolls. At my last place I took some 1/4" luan and made dividers to go between each roll of sandpaper. I drilled holes so they fit between the rolls. What I did't do was label the grits. They had a tendencey to move around on the rod and I would forget what grit I started with.

>John,

If you're talking about the small, 2" or thereabouts size discs, Craft supplies has a pretty neat little plastic organizer. It's about 12 or 14" long with bins that tilt outward, each holding a particular grit of discs.

>John,

How about custom designing a rolling cart to fit your needs? A dowel or pipe over the top to hold sandpaper rolls, beneath that a rack for tools, down lower separate slots for sandpaper. Maybe some holders or drawers for lathe accessories. You could mount holders or peg board all around the lower perimeter of it.

Just a thought,

Mike

>Take a look at Harbor Freight. They have a (yellow) tray system that holds something like 24 bins about 3" wide by 6" deep. It runs about $30. You could mount it on a cart and wheel it over when sanding. I have mine wall mounted about 4 feet from the lathe on the side where I stand. I have both 2 & 3" discs, pads, flap wheels and misc. other stuff for sanding stored there.

>Hi John

For 2" and 3" discs I use a simple fishing tackle box. One for the 2" and one for the 3" (actualy a third of overstock and spare mandrels).

As for where to store the other sandpaper. How about on the garage door. With the door down the paper is a step or two away and with the door up the sandpaper is over head. Just make the holder so it swings as the door opens and closes.

We are removing our color darkroom this week. Gave away 2 Beseler 45A enlargers. I took the day off to work in my new shop. It was better than mourning the loss.

>Mike

I think you might have the right idea. I have 2 lathes set up and If I hang the paper and other stuff it will always be in the way for other uses of the shop. If I make a rolling cart I can roll it the few feet between the lathes and have it at arms length.

Everything but the lathes are moveable in my shop so I can easily move things for building larger projects or when I have the clubs over for a day of turning. Actually only the powermatic is stationary and it can be put on wheels.

I don't see any 60 grit? You take all the fun out of sanding by turning to smoothly. Thanks for the idea.
