>Hi Adrien

I just got finished watching the "Woodworking at Home" DVD magazine. The is an article on the current magazine which shows how to sharpen the bit in question. I suggest that you get a copy of the magazine as Chris provides clear and easy to follow instruction on the DVD for sharpening this drill bit.

Basically it's a filing operation where you file the larges flat parts of the bit to create a sharp edge.

Most forstner (multi-spur is a form of forstner bit) bits are made of high carbon steel and they are not hardened much. So going high speed will likely ruin the bit.

Of course there are some hardened forstner bits. If you file and instead of the file cutting it skips across the surface then the steel is likely hardened. You can use a dremel type tool with a small stone to sharpen the edges.

Of course sharpening a drill bit is similar to sharpening a turning tool in that you want to remove as little steel as possible while still getting a fresh edge.

Here are a few pictures where the sharpening surfaces are pointed out.

Good Luck

Richard

>Adrien, a triangular profile file works well for this type of bit. Richard's info should be enough to get you started. Not a hard bit to sharpen.

File by applying pressure only on the forward stroke. The file will last longer, and the edge you are filing will be flatter, not as much rocking motion.

>Thanks Rich (and Keith). I'm ordering the DVD. I'm afraid I really cooked my big one, going high speed, trying to make bracelets for SWMBO.
