Cherry Branch Vase-Update w/pic

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hi Everyone,

Well I took the advice of many of you from here and over at WOW and decided to add some more branches to the cherry vase that I posted a few days ago. I'm still undecided about if I like it "completely". I like it enough to submit it to a juried show that the deadline is this afternoon. The theme of the show is "Nature's Inspirations" So I guess that's why this one is going. I've titled it "Waiting for Spring". I don't normally title my turnings, but there is a blank for one on the forms for the show. Here's two new photos along with how it use to look for comparison. As usual my photo set up is never the same twice and it shows here, ugh.

It is 7" tall, engraved with the Dremel engraver and then rubbed with liming wax, then buffed with the carnauba wheel. Final finish is a wipe with Lee Valley Conservators wax. One idea that I'm still contemplating is to carve the opening so that it's not perfectly round. Make it not so refined. Sort of textured a bit like the branches?

All comments are welcome.

Thanks for looking,

Jennifer

>I really like this latest version. In the previous, it seemed as though something was missing or lacking. Your latest effort reveals what that something is....additional branches. It fills out and gives balance and that is obvious seeing the "before and after" versions next to each other. Great job and good luck with the jury.

Nice. It reminds me of a tree iced over in winter. Maybe it's a cherry tree. John

>Thank you Mike, your comments are very kind.

I think it's a bit of an improvement....we'll see what the jury says :)

>John,

I wouldn't know a cherry branch from a maple branch in winter.....but lets just say that...why yes...those are cherry branches!

Thanks for the response :)

>Jennifer I saw the pics and at first I didint like it as much, seemed overpowering. But in 30 seconds snd the seeing the other shots it really grew on me - I like it alot better. They looked liked icicles and then I thought just as John did. An iced over branch. Perfect title, I think that the tile "ices" it up for you ;-). Really the title finishes it off perfectly good luck.

>Jennifer,

The shape of the vessel is very pleasing. I felt the branches were not long enough the first time around and look much better now. The effect of the liming wax of the cherry is great. You hit the effect you were going for bang on.

The only criticism that I'll offer is that I find the engraving competes a bit with the strong grain lines in that piece of cherry. The same engraving on a straight grained piece of cherry or mahogany would not suffer from this competition.

Good luck on the show and let us know how it turns out!

Gidday,

Jim
