Looking for nuts

MikeinCapeMay

>I'm looking for 1 1/4" X 8 tpi nuts with enough depth to thread onto a headstock spindle. I've tried Home Despot, Lowe's and several steel, welding and fabricating shops, all to no avail. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks much!

>Thanks Darryl. I purchased faceplates from him a year or more back for a previous lathe. I've tried several times over thew past week to go to his website but I can't connect to him and get a "Operation timed out" message.

>I bought a few from Bill a while back and had a bit of wobble with them. It turns out the spindle on my Nova 3K is too long for the nut to seat properly. They work great when I use a couple plastic washers. Some day I'll try to find some 1-1/4 machined washers.

>There is a William Noble in the AAW directory. Don't know if it is the same one. I do remember his e-mail was odd so this might be him

>Have who ever makes the face plate cut a 1 1/4" hole in the center all the way through and then "face" the the back of the nut to be parallel to the face of the face plate.

>Have you tried Fazzio's, in Glassboro? They are a local resource you really should become familiar with.

Fazzio's

Also, try McMaster-Carr and Bolt Depot.

>Thanks William, I ordered them earlier from McMasters. Fazzio's looks interesting and I'll have to check them out. Along these lines, are you familiar with a surplus type warehouse somewhere north of here maybe within 2 hours? Someone mentioned such a place to me awhile back and I can't recall where it is or the name. Supposed to carry a lot of surplus and used "stuff", a big place.

>I have found nuts in 1 1/4 x8 & also 1 x 8 from local suppliers in Phoenix, AZ & also in Portsmouth, NH. I would imagine you can also find them in any large city in NJ. The key is to look for a supplier in the Yellow Pages under "Fasteners." The nuts run about $1 each.

>That'd be Fazzio's. For some of us, it's a lot more entertaining than Las Vegas or Disneyworld. From Cape May, you could take 47 to 55 and get off at the Ferrel/Glassboro exit. Finding your way through Glassboro can be a bit of a problem, however.

Partially

>Noble welds a nut to a large washer. That washer. there is a recess under the nut on the wahser side. You then attach a wooden block to the washer for the face plate and turn it true. Works surprisingly well. I use then for vacuum faceplates with a facing for the vacuum.

>I went to an industrial recyler/scrap yard and bought nuts and "Blind" plates. The blind plates are end caps off big gas piping and are metal circles about 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick. I paid less than a dollar for each. About fifteen bucks for ten of each. I had a machinist weld the nuts on the plates and cut the hole and true them up for less than five bucks each. Ten face plates for about sixty bucks. I drill the holes in the plates for the screws, but the machinist would do that, too. You can get blind plates from about four inches up. I made one that was eight inches, but I almost never use it.
