airbrush, airbrush, airbrush, who knows about?

Mike Schwing from Md.

>I've come to the point in my insanity where I need to learn to use an airbrush for my next few bugs. It'll be a valuable skill for lots of other things, too, so it will be time well spent. (and money, too).

I have lots of experience painting autos and spraying finishes but nothing remotely like this. To start, I have several calls into local college art departments looking for a student who wants to make some extra money teaching me.

Still, I have no equipment other than required air delivery/filtration. Any guidance appreciated.

>Mike, I bought one last year and am struggling to climb the learning curve. I talked to several people and ended up buying the pasche VL. Dixieart.com has far and away the best price. I thought learning to spray lacquer was hard, it is nothing compared to learning a double action airbrush. I also would like to find someone to show me their techniques. There is only so much you can get from a book.

>Your best bet for instruction in airbrush technique is to pick up one of the street vendors who does painted T-Shirts. Some of them are really experts with the airbrush.

>I agree with Russ. My local T shirt person is really good. If you can find out when and where Binh Pho is teaching taking a class from him. He is a really, really good instructor. Frank Sudol is also good but I don't know if he's teaching any classes in the states right now.

They teach tons of Classes in Las Vegas(you needed a good vacation didn't you). There is a magazine called Airbrush Art(I think) The whole middle section of the magazine has adds for all the different classes offered. They look really interesting. That's where Binh and Frank both go to learn new things. John

>The way I started was to work with Binh, as mentioned above. Once you get the basics, then it's playtime. I am still not happy with my results. I did find a video produced by a guy who uses an airbrush to paint duck decoys. He has a rather substantial teaching business in terms of carving decoys. I think his website is www.duckblind.com. He has a video called Air Brush 101 that covers the technique and clean up of airbrushes quite well. By the way Binh recommends the Iwata air brush, double action.

Have fun,

I've got the Paasche VL - double action internal mix

The thing I like about it best is the fact that you can preset the paint mix and only have to worry about the air flow. Makes it much easier to handle than others on market.

There are several classes each year in the NY area and Las Vegas.

>Mike, check to see if you have any custom bike shops in your area. The bike builders use air brushes to paint tanks and fenders. Some of these guys are really good.

>Mike give me a call sometime. I used them to paint my decoys some years ago. Depending on application we can use single or double action. Paint consistency is key. There are several tricks I can share.

>Mike, I have had a lot of experience with Air Brushing. I used to race 1/24th Scale Slot Cars, and I have painted hundreds of clear Lexan bodies using an Air Brush. I have a Badger single stage, and a Paashe double action. Actually, they are fairly simple to use. Like mentioned previously, paint thinning is everything, as is pressure and tip size. Lacquer is among the easiest to spray, and I have sprayed Lacquer and water based paint thru them. For clear coats, just thin the lacquer about like you would to shoot an automotive application lacquer, and away you go. If you have paint experience, which you have Mike, you will take to it like a duck to water. Don't be intimidated Mike............it is just a baby spray gun! ;-)
