Drill press

>A drill press will work. You need to chuck a piece of wood or plastic in it, to act as a ram. It can be turned easily, with a tenon to fit the chuck. I don't like using metal bolts for that purpose.

The main reason for not using a drill press is CONVENIENCE. When I am turning pens I leave my vise in position all the time. If you don't turn a lot of pens at a time, that should be no problem. You can always drill holes in all the blanks ahead of time, and then use the drill press as a pen press.

That said, I like vertical pen presses much better. A cheap arbor press works well, and a lot of penturners use them.

>A short pipe clamp works great. I had already purchased a press from one of the supply outfits and then saw the pipe clamp or I would have saved the money on the press.

>thanks to everyone who has responded. Yes, I do have a drill press, but like the idea of having a dedicated pen press. I have a lot of scrap oak and will probably build one. any other plans are still welcome.

thanks
