Jet 1442 live center question

Jeremy in LA

>Does your live center heat up? I never noticed it in two years with my Jet Mini, but the very first time I used my new Jet 1442 I felt the live center was warm. This happened the next few times, as well as some noise (not big pieces of wood), and I realized it was wobbling, in a "runout" way. I received a new one from Jet the other day, and this one too heats up, although so far, it's not wobbling, but I am hearing quite a bit of noise when I tighten the tailstock into the wood and run the lathe (like bad bearing noise). Any thoughts? I'm considering the Oneway live center if this is going to keep happening. Thanks in advance for your opinions/comments.

>I have noticed that the center is just a press fit on the bearing, and not too good a one. It pulled off one time, and when I replaced it the center wasn't seated on the bearing, so it wobbled. Some taps with the mallet took care of that.

Otherwise, no problems or heat.

>I have the Oneway live center and love it. I replaced a cheap old live center with it. There was quite an improvement. The downside is its fairly large. I guess that would only be a problem if you were trying to use your whole spindle length capacity. I dont have any experience with the Jet lathe or center, Did you check the alignment of your tail and drive centers. If they are off it would put a constant side load on the live center bearing. Especially on short work. Good luck and good turning.

>I'll keep troubleshooting.. I'm also suspicious of a possible bearing noise in the headstock. Hope not, but some testing will tell me.
