New Turner!

Jimmy from Central IL

>Hi All.

A month ago I asked everyone what a good starter lathe would be for my 9 yr. old son. I would like for him to be able to "work" with Dad when I am in the shop. Well, we went with the Jet VS Mini. We finished our second class today and he wants to share his art work with everyone. (Really I think he wants to see his little mug on the internet...lol)

Here is his mini bat. Was a little intimidated at first. Started out as a 5x5x12 chunk of hard maple.

This is him with his Maple pen. I think I will need a wholesaler soon for kits!

I would like to thank everyone here for your time and information! Sorry for the poor picture quality.

>Awesome! I can see him making his teacher a pen as a gift. He'll be popular! Nice job on the turning. He should be very proud of himself.

>Nice work Tyler! Your handsome smile tells it all!

Great job on both projects. You're well on your way. Keep up the great work and pretty soon you'll be showing your dad a few things :)

Nice job to you too dad! There's nothing better than sharing shop time with our kids.

>Congratulations to your son and to you on the first work.

I hope he took off the necklace before turning.

Well done. You are off to a great start. I would like to invite you and your dad to a Central Illinois Woodturners meeting. Our next meeting is at the Peoria Woodcraft on Feb 14 at 6:30. We will be doing a demonstration on how to turn a corn cob pen.

Jimmy,

I'm happy to see you off and running! It appears you and your son had a blast working on these projects! He looks as proud as can be!

Whenever you're ready for those pen blanks, drop me a line.

See ya around,

Dominic

>This is great. Congradualtions. Watch out though. I taught my son to turn when he was twelve. On the same lathe I bought nearly thirty five years earlier when I was in high school. He needed a patron. While I was at work, he was turning. Brought him an endless number of turnig blanks. Bought him a better lathe. And then another. We went to turn with David Ellsworth for a week when he was fourteen, turning fifteen. It was his birthday present.

David, ever the gentleman, took me aside and said they hated it when the husband and wife or father and son came together. I asked why? David fumbled a bit and said it was because one of them was always better than the other. He was trying to tell me my son was better than I was. Thought I would be upset. I was thrilled. I told David I had taught him all I could and now it was time for him to teach him something.

Now I get advice from my son. Isn't it great? Maybe your son can teach you a trick or two.
