Jet Mini lathe head stock questions

Big Mike

>Jet Mini lathe head stock question

Hello Group, having not used my Jet mini much lately, (Been playing with my new full size lathe) I started to turn a pin and discovered an apparent problem with the barings in my head stock The motor is working fine but the spindle does not turn freely it sort of drags as if the Barings need grease? I can get it to turn but have to spin the spindle by hand to get it going then when I turn the power of the spindle stops immediately cant be good for the motor.

Before tearing it apart, I thought I would ask the group

Can I grease the Barings? Or are they sealed and need to be replaced, What I am asking I guess is what is the easiest fix If I need to replace can someone tell me where I can buy the parts?

Is there a trick to taking it apart?

(Note the lathe is only about 4 years old but my SW Indiana shop (pole barn) is draftyand cold this time of year not wet but sometimes condensation is on everythingI sometimes forget to cover with the tarp) I constantly am having to work the ways with sand paper and wax along with my table saw, band saw table, and other cast iron surfaces plans in process to build a new heated shop but for now my old pole barn will have to do.)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give...

>Condensation and cold.

Could be ice in the bearings along with the rust.

I lknow that some motors we keep in long term storage are periodically hand rotated and we keep heaters in some.

Perhaps some heat tape may be in order?

>I would first find out if it is the spindle itself. Loosen the belt, and try turning the spindle by hand.

While the belt is loose, try turning the motor by hand.

Parts can be ordered from Jet Tools (WMH Tool Group). There are several versions of the Jet Mini, but I only found the parts list for one of them. Only the motor and speed control are different for the VS version. The link below gives the prices for the parts.

>You may have to pay quite a lot from Jet if it needs new bearings . I replaced the bearings in mine myself and it only cost $12.00 for the set at my local Kaman bearing shop. The inside one is bigger than the outside one so take both to the bearing shop and they will read the numbers on them and give you exact replacement sizes.

If you are moderately mechanically inclined , they are not at all hard to change .

>Did the Handwheel get tightened on the shaft?

I was using the handwheel alot and it tightened up to far. The handwheel has two set screws to prevent over tightening. It is the outboard stop on the shaft. Loosen the set screws and back off the handwheel, see if that corrects the problem... It did on mine... Then just tightened it to where there is free movment. Tighten both set screws...

>I never feel like I"ve got too much to contribute, but I can help here... The bearings are 6004-2RS and 6005-2RS. They are used in a LOT of things, so shouldn't be too hard to find. I paid around 10.00 total for one of each, but can't remember where.

Just did a Internet search, found a lot of places 14.00 to 20.00. hth. Larry

I am confused .... lost my bearing on this ... *LINK*

>Larry, my web search brought all kinds of prices!

What gives? Look at one of the sites I found:

Cheap bearings?

>That's one cheap price, but remember like everything, these bearings can be made cheaply, with cheap materials, or better, with better materials.

Those listed measurements in mm are correct, but I'd have to guess there is either going to be one hell of a shipping charge, or they are cheap in more ways than one!!

Might want to stick to some "big name" or "reputable" companies. Is there such a thing anymore? Larry

P.S. Could be when you call to order that those prices were "just a typo"......

How to change the bearings on a Jet Mini

Mark Kauder. Phenix City, AL

>Big Mike,

Unless you are complete dunce, you can change these bearings in about 30 minutes.

1) loosen the set screw on the hand wheel and unscrew it from the spindle.

2) Reach in and loosen the set screw on the pulley inside the headstock.

3) Now you can pull the spindle out the front (turning side).

4) Take a 3/8"-1/2" WOODEN dowel, and go throught the larger bearing hole in the front bearing and carefully drive out the smaller back bearing.

5) Now drive the front bearing out the of the front.

6) Reverse the order now (though it does not matter which you put in first). Take your time - drive them in with a wooden block on top of them.

7) Slide the spindle in the front bearing, slide the pulley on - don't forget the belt.

8) Line up the pulley with the bottom pulley and tighten the set screw.

9) Screw on the Handwheel. You want it on just enough to remove any end play in the spindle, but not tighter.

10) Tighten the set screw on the handwheel.

11) Pat yourself on the Back and get back to turning.

>Thanks Everyone!

Its so nice to find such a great group of guys... much more info than I hoped for

Armed with the information from these posts... I will have the Jet back up and running in no time. I like to think I am at least moderately mechanically adept even that dunce could change the bearings.

Figure while I am at it... its time to repaint the lathe, file and wax the tool rest, sand and wax the ways... get the little guy back in shape...

Thanks again
