New Lathe Not Very Forgiving!

Barry Turner

>I decided to take a maiden voyage with my new lathe Tuesday night. I had a piece of green cherry. I turned the outside profile of a 6" natural edged bowl intending to leave on the bark. I reversed the blank into a Supernova chuck with 2" dovetail jaws. As I was hollowing the inside, I got a big catch! Quicker than the eye, the foot was ripped off the bowl and the bowl went airborne! When I retrieved it, I found it was no longer a natural edge bowl.......not with bark anyway. My very first bowl on my brand new lathe........and now it's firewood! Better luck next time!

>Too bad, Barry.

At least you know now that your new lathe has plenty of power. 8^]

>Mr. Turner, Don't burn that bowl!

Mount and save it as a memento of the beginnings of your 'big lathe' life. As you turn beautiful work tomorrow, the souvenir will help to keep you humble and your Jet-mini proud. :)

>Barry

I think your new lathe needs a lot of excersize. I currently have a business exercising, training and grooming new lathes so if you want to drop it off at my place I'll take good care of it for you. When you get it back it will be quite house brocken and happy. John

>I agree! I have a serving of humble pie pretty regularly. It's good for you! Actually, I don't even have a woodstove or fireplace. If that bowl had been on my Jet mini, the belt would have slipped, but the bowl would have been saved.

I thought I had the belt loose enough to slip on the Stubby, but apparently not loose enough!

>Well it probably would take at least two years to house (er Shop)break it, so that should be enough :-).

>Barry- just remember that it wasn't the lathe that caused the catch! Pilot error!!

>You're right of course! Hardly anything is gonna be this lathe's fault! I'm feeling the pressure already!
