Cherry Vase w/pic

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Well here is yet another experiment that I finished yesterday. This hollow is about 9" tall and 4" wide. The branches were scribed on with my Dremel engraver and then rubbed with liming wax. My intention was to get the appearance of snow covered branches. Not sure that I got that across? I think this might have worked better on a darker wood like Walnut. I honestly have no idea what the reaction to this piece will be from others.

I have gotten too close to it and have looked at it too much in the past couple of days to have an opinion. I look at it and think hey that's not bad ....and then I'll look at it an hour later and think....that is weird....and the branches look like an after thought? Do I need more branches? None at all? Is it the shape that's odd? The collar? Is it just right? Is it just because it's something I've never done before that I can't figure it out? Does this ever happen to you? You just honestly don't know if it's a decent piece or not? I'm looking forward to hearing your comments. It only has two coats of Danish oil on it and I'm thinking I won't buff it because I'd be afraid the liming wax might come out?

Thanks for looking : )

My reaction....

Andy Halterman: Prime rib hangover

>is very simply that I like it alot. Also, I think the other three you posted last evening are nice too. I think you hit real close to the effect you wanted. I thought "branches" even before I read the text. Of course, a good meal can do that to a guy. :-)

I'm glad you saw branches and not cob-webs or something!

>Jennifer,

I like it! and I love the vase. just an Idea, have you thought about mixing some burning in with it maybe? not sure it would work.

I really like all the stuff you've been trying posting, I think you are headed in a great direction!

>Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I like the form. I also like the branches, however I think I would do more of them. Right now it seems as if you're too tentative with them...a good start, but you're not done yet. I also like the liming wax idea. Seeing the white was a bit surprising, due to being used to seeing so much burning lately. Maybe not on this one, but I like the idea of integrating both this treatment and the burning. I really like your experimentation. Ain't it FUN!

>Ken,

Thank you for the nice comments. I intended to burn the branches initially, but then after using the burner on the white bowl with the free hand work, I decided I just didn't have the right tip for that. I need one that will do finer lines and manuver more easily. Maybe it's operator error? Probably :)

Well Done.

BTW - what is with the sudden spate of turnings - you on vacation??

>Molly,

I think tentative is a good word. And you're right I was : )....When I took the Dremel to it I hesitated a bit. Should I or shouldn't I? I think I will go back and just continue the branches. Maybe all the way down. Perhaps I'll have them come up from the bottom too? Hmmm...?

Thanks for your comments. I sincerely appreciate them.

>Thanks Mark....

No, not on vacation....but my 4/10 hour work weeks gives me a lot more turning time. I love having 3 days off a week. I've been working that for about a year now. I don't know..seems like I can't get enough turning in lately. I really am having fun out there. I need two pieces for my submission for a juried show by Tuesday too. That might have something to do with it, yikes!

Thanks for your Yummy comments....means a great deal comming from you.

>Barry, I was wishing that more of the wax stayed in the engraving too....I should have made the branches deeper....maybe if I go back over the them I'll go a bit deeper to hold onto the liming wax more.

Thanks for your comments.

>Jen -- Nice vase !! I agree with Molly-- Put more branches on the form and inter-twine a mix of the waxed along with some that are burned. But--not on the collar.

Remember you are expermenting

>Hi Jennifer,

Just for reminders look at the first bowl you ever turned.

I really like the shape and the grain on this piece. I think you are on the right path with the burning and the carving. They will keep getting better as you become more comfortable with it and refine your tools.

Have you looked at the air powered mirco carvers? I hear they are nicer than the dremel for this type of work. Maybe some one near you has on you could tryout.

Keep up the great work.

>Jennifer, I like the shape and etchings that sort of blend in rather than jump out because of the contrast. I see roots rather than branches almost like they are wrapped around holding the vase. To me branches would be turned or winding up. Branches or roots it is still a fine piece.

I thought roots too...

>and I like the form, but I think I'd like the collar better if it was more concave (vs. "flat").

I see the collar as sitting on top of it, not part of the form.

Just my opinion- everyone's got one.

>Jennifer,

I agree with the general concensus: a beautiful vase with very nice flowing lines, but maybe too tentative on the carving.

Here's a thought (while looking out at a number of snow-covered branches at -18 F...) you might try burning one edge of the branch, and carving/liming the other side. Snow tends to accumulate on one side of a branch, and the other side will look even darker because of the white snow. If you were to continue with liming wax alone, I'd use a darker wood, but if you combine burning and liming, Cherry or a similar wood might be just right, with enough contrast to show off both.

I can also picture 2 or 3 larger branches with a number of smaller twigs branching off, wrapped around the piecce in a rough spiral -- maybe even an Oak with a lone leaf still attached... Or Andi Wolfe style colored leaves and an early snowfall ... this will be fun !

I hope we get to see more of your experiments !

New Ideas

Ben Aragon

>Jennifer,

I really like the vase and agree with the general consensus of need more branches. What I really like is how this vase has given so many ideas to everyone. I know when I look at your work I get several new ideas that I think I can use in my turning, Thank You.

Best Wishes,

Ben

>I would second Chucks comment. You seem to have a good sense of adventure in this. Risk is the name of the tune, particularly as you continue to grow as a turner. I have been playing with inlay recently, color, and piercing. This is a result of being with Bihn Pho and Al Stirt, two of the most creative people I know. Some of my experiments work and some suck. But I'm having a blast. I saw some really good stuff on inlay in the new Woodturning Design mag that just came out. You might check it out.

By the way, I love the form of the vase, and the piece of cherry is exquisite.

Finally, the micro drills that Bihn connected me with are those that dentists use. They are really sweet to work with.

>Very Nice Indeed!

I like the branches on top and think you have the right amount. Did you think about adding some "roots" or something on the bottom?

I love the form, it works very well. If I may critique a little, the collar has a different radius then the top of the vase. Maybe on the next one try flattening the collar a little.

>Hey Jen,

If you are finding your style it seems to be a very wide ranging one from the past three posts. All of them are great. I like the branches and think they are just minimalist enough. I definitely have some catching up to do! I may be calling about a visit in the next month (before you start charging for lessons).

Sounds like as soon as I take the nursing board I need to go see Halterman more!

A Work In Progress.....

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Thanks to all of you for commenting and helping me to think beyond what I see in this piece. Today I spent more time adding more branches and defining them a bit more. I didn't have time to rub the new branches with the liming wax before I had to leave for work so I'll do that tomorrow. Everybody has been so great with their ideas and thoughts on opportunities for this one. I really appreciate it. I'll post a follow up picture hopefully by Sunday.

Thanks again!

Charging for lessons! Ha! I'm still saving my money to take one myself!

That's why the "free" advice here is worth so much to me :)
