>Since Mike Schwing keeps torturing us with huge burls we will never see as turnings, I thought I'd post this...
Here's a large Willow burl available to me in Western Mass -- its about 54" x 66" where it was cut off the stump; that's my wallet on there for scale, on a photo from last summer. I think its a Weeping Willow, but it might be a Black Willow, as these are pretty common with burls, too. Should I go get it ?
>Well, sort of just kidding. I wasn't sure Willow Burl was all that great for turnings, but after seeing the brightly colored pieces made by Michael Allison on the WOW's site, I thought I really ought to go get it.
So far I haven't had any equipment big enough to harvest this thing. I need one of Bubba Bob's Poo-Lan chain saws, as my Mac & Stihl aren't big enough! I have a buddy with some big equipment and a modified horse trailer made into a wood hauler. After things thaw a bit, say in April, I hope to drive down and get some of this beast.
