SAW BUCK

Jim King-Iquitos,Peru

>After many saw bucks and many chainsaw chains ruined hitting nails I made this beast out of 6x6 and 4x12 old bloodwood we had laying around. No nails or anything to damage the chain, just the weight holds it together. The flat end for flat stock and the V end for log peices.

>I think Jim is picking on us a little here. There's a little bit of "Na na nana na, I've got something you don't have." in that post. 8-)

With my treated 2x4 saw buck I made it so I don't have to bend over. So there.

>I did think it would get some comments as it is bloodwood but it truly is not good for turning as it was badly cured and full of cracks but a great cross buck. As said one mans treasure is another mans junk, I would love some knotty pine.

>Knotty Pine you say?

Now if there was a easy way to trade across the boarder we would have a deal. . .

Knotty pine?????

Carole in VA

>You want knotty pine? I can't imagine what for unless it's paneling. I hate the stuff! But seeing you using huge chunks of bloodwood (even badly cured bloodwood) for a sawbuck just brings tears to my eyes. :( Something is topsy-turvy in this crazy woodworking world! LOL

>Carole: May sound a bit strange but the most sought after wood here is pine that comes in pallets from the States under oil field equipment. A pine dining set from pallets is several times the value of any local wood.

>Isn't that amazing! Some guys use pallet lumber for boxes and furniture here in the States, but we pay dearly for bloodwood. It IS probably my favorite wood to work with, machines like butter, polishes up with no effort, gorgeous all 'round. And you use it to frame houses!

We have so much knotty pine that it is hard to give it away.

When my wife and I come visit you we will HAVE to find a way to bring you something of value. I already offered to send Jim tools but he told me they'd get stolen so don't waste my money. As long as you can hook me up with a good peacock bass fishing trip I'll bring you whatever you want!

>I just gave away a whole mess of antique heart pine flooring leftovers to someone just a few weeks back. It was taking up too much space and it had to go. I figure he got about $400 worth.

>Mike: When you get here and we go fishing I dont want to make you feel worse but you will see that the majority of the houses in the river villages use black palm for the floors as it is no good for any thing else. The poorest people in the western world with an average income of $32 per month per family have $10,000 floors in their houses and dont know it "or care". They are happy.

>One mans scrap is definately others treasure. A friend of mine bought a couple of hot air balloons from Brazil. The crates they were shipped in were made from some amazing wood. We think, though not sure, that the frame for the crate is Pernambuco and the plywood is at least 3/4 with I forget how many laminations - the nicest plywood I've seen no voids or anything. I got a few 2"X2" X 3' sticks of the framing wood to make into pens. It's reddish orange & incredibly dense & heavy. He called the guy & asked what kind of wood it was. The answer was that he didn't know but it's just the junk they use to frame stairs & build crates with :-O.

>Jim, you see badly cured wood for a sawbuck... I see loads and loads of pen blanks.... I think we have discussed this before in emails..LOL...

You have to start taking some of that scrap and shipping it North as pen blank material.. 3/4"x6" is nice... 1"x6" is gold...
