Chessmen - Novice question.

Don Thompson - Cutler Ridge, Florida

>Can someone point me to any general instructions and/or references for the techniques and tools required to make chess pieces? I could swear that I saw a reference to this recently, but now I can not find it.

Thanks,

Don

>Don, the search function at the top of this page works real well. Just enter the word "chess" and you will be amazed!

I am kind of a slow-head, Fred.

>This is one article I looked at before, and will probably use when I get ready to turn my chess set. There are two pages, with links to the patterns in the second page. This one looks like a rather easy one. Hope this works for you!

>Check out the Fall, 2004 issue of Woodturning Design. An excellent article on designing and turning Chessmen by Make Darlow starts on page 36. If you can't get your hands on a copy, e-mail me.

That looks like an interesting article, although I must confess that I am looking for tips for holding and shaping undersized pieces, as opposed to the extra-large ones in the article. I am trying to puzzle out the best way to hold them to the lathe. With only a the face plate and the centers supplied with my new Jet Mini, I am thinking I need some more toys, er, gadgets.

I did find a UK book Turned Chessmen that is out of print (I think), but was available from an outfit in the US.
