Wood for goblets

>Any recommendations for which wood to be used for a goblet? I have turned small ones out of hard maple. I am planning on turning a larger one (3-4" in diameter) that would get occasionally used. Oak is obviously out as the large pores would act like minature straws. I was figuring hard maple - any other suggestions?

>Yellowheart, Cocobolo, Lignum Vitae. I saw goblets made of all of these couple weekends ago. Very nice. Sure they are pricey but the end result of the Cocobolo and lignum vitae would be well worth it.

I personally think you could use any wood. The number of coats of sealer you use and than the finish would determine how water tight or resistant it would be. I recall seeing a gent at a Rennisance fair selling mugs made from about 20 differetn woods ranging from purpleheart to oak to maple to walnut.

Guess the next question would be is it for useage or is it an "art" piece. if its art that opens up a whole nother group you could use.

>Red Oak is bad White Oak is good. The straws in white oak have walls across them and do not leak. White Oak is the wood of wine and whiskey barrels.

UMMMM! WINE AND WHISKEY! Oops! I've heard Sycamore was used for vessels because it didn't impart a flavor to them.
