Chain Saw Chain Question

Stuart Johnson

>After unsuccessfully trying to cut through a very large nail buried in a piece of Cottonwood I went shopping for a new chain. My saw is an older Craftsman 18 x .325. The local Ace has two 18 inch chains. There is a third variable that I think was called link ot link drive. The two sizes they have are 68 and 74. The chains are Stihl if that makes a differance. What are they referring to and where can I find what mine is?

>Stuart,

Seems like you are describing the number of drive links. If so, you should remove your current chain and count the number of "tabs" that fit into the bar. The number is determined by the number of teeth in your drive sprocket, but it's easier just to count the drive teeth. Also make sure that the Stihl chains have your saw listed as a fit on the box.

Hope this Helps

>Stuart, Place a phone call to Oregon Chain, they manufacture most of the chains that are on the various saws. I ran into this problem a year or so ago, they have a toll free number, come to think of it they no doubt have a web site where you can get the same information. Anyway the lady that took my call couldn't have been more helpfull, I gave her the make and model of the saw and she asked me where I was going to purchase it. I told her the national hardware store name and you know what, she then gave me the product number of the chain the saw should have on it. It wasen't an oregon number even though oregon made the chain, now that's what I call customer service. Give them a try, good luck.

Oregon Chain Saw

>A google search for Oregon chainsaw got me to their home page. They have a search feature that tells exactly which chain to buy. I also remembered where the manual was and found out mine is has a 72 drive link.

>Did you look on the saw body for a label? I bought a used Craftsman for back up a couple years ago and it had the chain data on a label on the body.
