>I've started making things from wood that people bring me from the family homestead. It seems to be a little niche around here where I can make some money. I don't make any promises of a certain object or size unless I have control of the wood and when it's cut. If they bring me the usual 16" or less piece that was cut last year, all I promise them is "something" So far everyone has been really excited about the results and it tests me to come up with something with a little flair that they will be proud of.

This is my latest "commission". It is a piece of maple. Ideally she wanted an oval bowl. I was lucky the wood wasn't bad but I couldn't keep the bark on. I peeled it off and burned the edge. It looked horrible so I carved away the burn and shaped the edge. Then I took 3 different round Dremel tools and textured the edge. I learned this from Jane Saylor(sp) of Alabama. I think it turned out nice.

I apologize for the photography. I just moved and I think I know what quadrant of the garage has my photo stuff but I sure don't know which box.

>Hi John,

I like it! I like the round edge that you put on it. Did I understand you correctly in that all the bark was removed? Because it sure does look like bark! Nice job on the texturing. I'm sure the owner will love it!

>Wow John, that is a very nice little bowl. I know that the person who "commissioned" it will love it! Kinda' borders on Art which I'm not a big fan of, but in this case I do. Functional Art I like, non-functional art I don't.

Excelent job on replicating the bark, sure couldn't tell in the pics that it wasn't the real thing.

I'm not sure what I'd do with it, but I certainly don't think I'd use it as a sponge bowl.

This particular maple had 2 inner layers of bark. One light and the next one was cherry colored. I cut off the bark and all the white inner layer. The cherry colored stuff was really soft in some areas and I had to be really careful carving it. Unfortunately I had taken if off the lathe before I carved it or I would have done it with a spokeshave which would have been much easier. I did this with a chip carving knife.

>No it's a really stupid cartoon that the kids love. Sponge Bob Square Pants. It's about an undersea square sponge who wears underpants. It is easily one of the worst cartoons I've ever seen but don't try to pull a 5 year old away from it. They'll bite your hand.

>OK John, I'll accept the excuse about the photo equipment as the reason for the blue light and background, but don't make a habit of it!! I expect better of you!!

>Don't blame it on the kids. My 40-year old brother-in-law loves it! Of course, he's a little strange. 'Nuff said.

That was through a North facing window. I should have used the shaded building white balance instead of Sunny. I wasn't thinking. My brain gets numb below 50 degrees.
