Recommendations for Buffing Systems?

Jeremy in LA

>My second question in as many minutes! Sorry but I think of these things for two weeks before remembering to post them I guess. What's your favorite buffing system, of the ones that can be set up on the lathe? I think like the ones with a mandrel and three separate buffs, but I'm trying to decide if there's a "champ" out there.. this is for everything from pens to hollow forms, large bowls.. I realize that some get in their own way for certain shaped turnings.. but I'm curious as to whether some of those more experienced in "wood buffing" have any strong favorites, and maybe why. Thanks again! :)

>I prefer the Bealle type wheels, for no other reason than that they can be swapped without having to loosen and tighten a nut on the end of an arbor.

>I have a mild preference for the Beall wheels over the Wood'N Things version, and a larger preference for the Beall over the Oneway system. Most of it comes down to the attachement with the Beall being in my experience, the most secure and easiest to mount. I've gotton occasional slippage on the Wood'N Things version and I find their out flat head to be a bit less desirable. Overall though, the Beall and Wood ' N Things are quite similar.

When it comes to mounting them, I much prefer the Wood'N Things 8 inch spindle mount mandrel (obtainable from LV, Packard, Craft Supplies, and more directly from Don Pencil). The eight inch version allows you to get deeper into the inside of bowls, but still remains rigid. The Beall and Wood'N Things wheels can be interchangeably used on this shaft as they use the same 3/8 x 16 threading to attach.

I'd also suggest you sooner or later obtain a set of 3 inch Beall Bowl Buffs, which are a bit less dense, use the same combination of fabrics, and have the same attachment bolts as the wheels. These are superior to their goblet buffs as they only use the coarser fabric and require a pigtail mandrel for mounting. I recommend the 3 inch size for the greatest versatility for both bowls and boxes, but you may eventually want a larger or smaller size depending on what items you usually buff. They are good for some external work as well as internal.

I've written a comprehensive discussion on buffing technique and products for More Woodturning, a pdf version of which can be obtained at the link below.
