pueblo series -- working out the bugs!

>still trying to develop a better pyrography technique, but i've worked out the design issues.

pleased with the overall shape but my pyrography technique needs works. amazing how much easier it is to draw freehand than just a simple, straight line!

all comments, critiques, suggestions welcomed ... (well, except for mike if he suggests i need to add a few bugs!!!)

Very beautiful. I'm a traditionalist and can't say I like....although I appreciate a loy of the hollow form art, but I must say, this is beautiful. Congratualations. BTW, I'm not sure that it would be as nice is it looked as if it was CNC lasered, so your pyrography is fine by me.

>Hi -e-,

I REALLY like this piece! The form, the finish, the burning. A big Bravo! I'd love to see a shot looking down on it. Great pattern in the burning too.

Thanks for the inspiration!

>Very nice young lady! I like it a lot. The form is beautiful and I like the artwork, too. What makes it so white? Bleach or paint?

>Wow! Just the thought of laying out the pattern kind of leaves me exhausted. That looks like it was a lot of work. It is striking in its own way. Thanks for posting.

>bleached with a/b bleach ... mike. then sanded some areas to get sort of an antique look ... didn't want it all uniform.

>thanks for your comments, michael...i agree with you on the cnc, but this would be so much nicer with a bit more symetry in the lines ...

>That's really impressive. I can't draw a straight line. I can draw nice crooked ones but not a straight one. I like the way the lines sort of break it up into 3rds. I'd love to see it in person because I think being able to look down on it as well as walk around it, would be a lot of fun watching the patterns.

>Wow, what a challenge. Did you eventually go cross-eyed? I love the form. I admire the technical issues, that's a lot of hard work.

No measuring....just triangles

Michael Stadulis, in snowy Gloucester County, NJ

>Hi E.

Would you please explain what you meant when you said "No measuring". I figured that the jar has latitude and logitude lines.......so to speak, that intersect to form squares in which the artwork was done. Are you saying it wasn't done that way?

What makes this piece so wonderful and original is the fact that everything is not measured and symetrical. Good Work!

>-e-,

I keep coming aback to look at this beautiful piece. I'm wondering how much layout you did prior to starting to burn? Just a few horizontal & vertical lines to space things out? Also did you bleach first and then burn?

It really is a very nice piece of work.

Re: No measuring....just triangles

-e-

>mike:

all done freehand ... its easy to mark out the vertical lines by eye just bisecting the angles at the top...i sketch the lines to the widest circumference, flip it over, bring the lines down to the bottom.

for the horizontal lines, looking at the curve and desired triangle proportions, the lines are easily drawn just hold the pencil and rotating the vessel.

Then I draw in the alternating diagonal lines the pattern has alternating mirror images of triangles that are then filled in.

Hope this helps if not let me know.

>thanks john ... yes, the photo is very limiting in that it gives only one small perspective ... perhaps i'm just too close to the work because the imperfection of my burning really bothers me. i'm hoping i can improve that in future pieces.

Re: pueblo series -- working out the bugs!

-e-

>hi jen!

see my previous response to mike for answers to the layout.

yes, sanded, bleached, sanded and put a light water-white lacquer finish on it before laying out the design and burning it in.

i only need to sketch in the vertical/horizonal and alternating diagonal lines in -- from that point i can burn-in the triangles.

emai me if you want further details ... how's your woodburning coming along???

>-e-...thanks for the explanation below. I appreciate it. As for my burning....well I have two under my belt....nothing headed for a gallery :)...just playing around really. So far I'm really enjoying it. I love the coil tip and the #17 so far. Think I'd like to get the #12 soon too. Thanks for all of your help and info on this.
