Alcohol a legal issue??

Alcohol a legal issue??

Russ Fairfield

>Not being an alarmist, but....

Has anyone taken the time to look into the legal and insurance issues around keeping a large inventory of alcohol in their home or shop??

There are Fedral regulations, and maybe State as well, that require registration of any large quantity of alcohol of any kind. Alcohols are on the substance list for making explosives at the ATF, and drugs at the DEA. If you have purchased it by the drum, they already know about it.

The environmental and insurance issues would be the same as if you had a 55-gallon drum of gasoline stored in your garage. The environmental folks are worried about a spill, and your insurance company is looking for a reason to not pay a fire damage claim.

There are regs

MikeinCapeMay

>I haven't read them, but if anyone is interested here's the Canadian Regs regarding denatured alcohol:

Here's the U.S. Federal regs:

>Lee That's exactly what I was thinking but then again I just insured my business and they wouldn't let me put in a wood stove. I asked if I could park my car in the garage. After all it is full of gas and has a hot engine and spews all kinds of nasty stuff from the tailpipe. The agent wasn't amused. John

just pile it on....

Mike Schwing from Md.

>with all of the other laws and regs I'm probably breaking. Trust me, there has to be stuff here that the authorities would rather me not have than some denatured alcohol.

But I do often wonder about the fire and fumes that would ensue if my basement workshop and its glues, sovlents, sealants and finishes were to catch. That might an impressive sight.

A bit different...

BubbaBob

>...I would think in that the gas in your car was probably pumped there by properly (according to the government and insurance company) designed and manufactured equipment, it is in a part of the auto that, again, according to them, was properly designed and manufactured for your use, and is not removed to be used in an unsupervised (that's the government's problem...no supervision) manner.

You, as an unsupervised danger to the public, without caring if your house burned, would OBVIOUSLY take no care in the handling of the alcohol and therefore MUST be prevented from using it.

>John,

That was sort of a tongue in cheek comment :)

I just received a letter from my Homeowners Insurance company informing me that that were not going to renew my policy, unless I remove the slide from the pool which has been there for about 12 years.

5000 gallons??

Mike Rubes, Apex, NC

That was not the clearest doc I've ever read, but if I understood it correctly, unless I'm buying 5000 gallons annually, the feds don't really care?  Did anyone else get that same number from the doc?   At $10 a gallon, that's $50,000, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say no home hobbiest bowl turner has to worry about that!

Again, though, I'd be curious if anyone else concurs or finds something different on that page.  This is the part I'm quoting:

Subpart E of 27 CFR part 20 still

reflects that expansio today.

Specifically, applicants (other than

States, political subdivisions and the

District of Columbia) who wish to

obtain more than 5,000 gallons of SDS

per year must, in addition to other

requirements, submit an Industrial

Alcohol Bond, ATF Form 5150.25

Where SDS is defined as "Specially Denatured Spirits", which includes alcohol or rum that has been treated with denaturants to make them unfit for beverage use.  SDS includes specially denatured alcohol (SDA) and specially denatured rum (SDR).  (taken from the same doc).

Anyway, that's just what I got from that link.

Thanks,

Mike

Hoping my 3 gallons don't constitute a security breach in Apex, NC!!

>Insurance companies are funny. I live in South Carolina, and when I built this house I installed a a highly sofisticated California (preeformed log) burning stove. The isurance company wanted $300.00 premium for the wood stove in the basement rec. room. The same insurance company insured my daughters house in Michigan with two wood burning stoves and no premium. The fire chief said that in all likelihood the insuance co. figured that in South Carolina it would be an tin airtight in a mobile home. So much for intelligent industries!!

>My reason for asking is that I am reading here that some folks are buying denatured alcohol in multiple 55-gallon drums.

At some point a little solvent for home use grows into a fuel storage facility, and it only takes the purchase of one drum to become a suspected Meth Lab in some places.

I had to do a photo of meth making supplies the other day. The scary thing is, I own most of them. I can't even imagine putting most of that stuff in my body and believe I'm no prude.

>I guess I better not say anything about the 25-30 gallons of nitromethene I have sitting in my workshop along with the methonal alcohol. But, I only have 6 gallons of it in my garage along with the 5 gallons of gasoline, 3 gallons of paint thinner, and 5 gallons of diesel.

Mike, try this...

BubbaBob

>...between methanol by the 55 gal drum for biodiesel and lye by the 100 pound drum for the biodiesel and handcrafted soap, the ATF and DEA don't even bother you about 5 gallons of denatured alcohol.

Damn I'm glad the local sheriff is a friend that knows what I'm doing.

>Hmmm,

Someday I might need 5000 gallons. I don't want the government to have that in my file. I know-- I'll make my own. I already make my own beer. Even better, yeah that's it.... I can make more than I think I'll use & sell it to other bowl turners. Dr. Chuck's Patented Bootleg Bowl Drying Medicine.
