Finish turning dry bowls - - tips needed !

Pete L

>Guys - - Am relatively new to the bowl turning game. Over the past 4-6 weeks, I have roughed out about a dozen Cherry & White Oak bowls in the 8-11" diameter and up to 5" deep. Alcohol drying was chosen, and so far, so good. Will post an update on that process in a month or so when the other bowls are completed.

Question(s) is: How best do I finish turn the dry bowls? First attempt grabbed a tool and split the bowl. Second attempt was successful. Use some wiped on mineral spirits to aid in the cutting. Should I be using the bowl gouge or scraper? If so, any tips, techinques, or links to share?

Currently, temperature here in Holland, MI this evening is 9F with 4-6" of snow inbound tonight.

>Without knowing what kind of lathe and equipment you have it is difficult to tell you how to proceed. You can mount the bowl between centers and true it up or you can mount it on cole type jaws and true the dovetail (if you used one) and the outside, then turn it around and put it in your chuck(if you have one) to reshape the inside and cut to the final dimensions. There are other ways too but we need to know what type accessories you have.

>Current equipment is as such: JET 1236 lathe, Oneway chuck, 3/8 Sorby bowl gouge, bowl scraper, and standard set of turning tools. Bowl was turned with a tenon on the base and the open end is presented towards the tail stock (though not used) during the dry/finished turning phase.

Thanx !

>With what you have you will have to jam chuck it to complete. Since I always use my large cole type jaws I will let someone else tell you the best way to jam chuck or you can check out the John Jordan video on bowlturning which shows a good way of doing this.

>The method we`ve been teaching to reverse turn green bowls and to true the tenon on dry roughs is to turn a drive mandrel(just a shallow drum chuck)that has a tenon that works on your scroll chuck.

Mount the mandrel blank(we use 6-7" dia dry oak as that`s what we have)on a screw chuck, true the OD and turn a tenon.Remove it from the screwchuck and mount it by the tenon to round over the rim and hollow as needed.

Mount the dried blank between the mandrel and the tailstock using just enough pressure to drive without slipping.Retrue the tenon and exterior of the blank and then proceed to the inside holding it by the now trued tenon.

Hope this helps.
