Boice Crane morse taper question

Lance

>I have an old Boice Crane lathe that I'm restoring. It appears to be a 1940/1950's vintage. I don't have any of the live/dead centers and am wondering what Morse taper this lathe would have. Anyone know or have a source I can check with?

Thanks,

Lance

>The Machinery's Handbook, probably available at your local library, lists most all machine tapers and their dimesions which would allow you to do some measuring of your lathe and get you pointed in the right direction. If you have a machinist (or drafting) acquaintence he/she should also have the book. Good luck.

>Almost certain to be #1 0r #2 Morse taper. Probably #1 in that era. Borrow both male tapers and see which one fits. Or measure the diameter of the external end of the socket (at the distal end of the spindle). If more than 1/2 (0.7) inch it's very likely a #2 Morse taper. If less than 1/2 (.475) inch it's a #1 MT.

>Kind of like your little finger index finger and thumb, 1 2 3. Go to your closest woodcraft type store and buy a #2. I will work or be to small or to large. #2 is the most common.

Good turning and be safe

>Per the Machinery's handbook, a #1 morse taper hole should measure about 0.475" diameter at the opening. A #2 measures 0.700", a #3, 0.938".
