Shoes for turning?

Mike Rubes, Apex, NC

>Hi all,

The thread below about smocks got me thinking about what shoes I like to wear for turning and was wondering if others have shoes they prefer to turn in? For me, I don't mind shavings and dust down my shirt, but I *hate* it when I get shavings and stuff in my shoes. In the summer I wear shorts and it cannot be helped, but in the winter I've found a solution that, for me, kills two birds with one stone.

My shop is basically unheated. I have a small electric unit I use on chilly days, but if the outside air temp is 35 or lower, I just don't go to the shop. But on long pants days, I have a pair of sheepskin boots that are fabulous to turn in! The sheepskin keeps my feet warm and since they are boots, I can just blast my lower legs with the airhose when I'm done and voila! clean shoes! This is so much nicer than having to take off my sneakers and clean them out at the end of every turning session, plus it keeps shavings off my socks and out of the laundry :)

So what about anyone else, anyone have favorite turning shoes?

Mike

>I hate getting shaving in my shoes. They won't come out. I've been tempted to by those turning shoe protectors that look like Gaitors. Bobby Clemons had some on when I went to his house and they really do work well. You look a little strange but then I look a little strange anyway.

>Clean out your seaks? Dang maybe that's why I am alwasy beeing yelled at by my wife when I come in from the shop. I clean out my sneaks I just blame the chips on the dog. "He must have brought them in on his hair."

Poor Brodie, he takes it like a champ.

>NewBalance 609. NB comes in wide widths which I need, they also provide a lot of support. The 609 is a cross training shoe and very comfortable. Of course I could probably use gators, always have to clean the chips, dust and shavings out. I also surf fish and have what are called gravel guards on my wading shoes, I could probably use those!

Steel toe safety shoes

>I have dropped enough chunks of wood and things on my toes that safety shoes are a requirement.

Am I the only one with this problem??

>Hi Mike

Steel toes is the order of the day. Even in shorts, I wear steel toes. In fact, even at the picnics you have been to, I am wearing steel toes just because I don't have to worry about what falls on my feet. I tried sandals a couple of times, but it just made me nervous. You know what a sharp tool falling point first will do to an unshod foot, and sandals are about as unshod as you can get and still have some sole. ;-) Besides, you never know when you will meet up with a bunch of giggly college girls at a sawmill!

>Winter time is definately "tennie shoes" and jeans, with the pants legs long enough to cover the shoes. In the summer time, either cutoffs or jeans and JC's - if you missed the 60's that's sandals. My preference is thong-sandals or as some call them - flipflops. But, I also have my industrial opentoed leather version for the big stuff. With sandals you don't have to worry about shavings getting into them, they just pass on through..

>Mike,

New Balance shoes ROCK! That's what I wear.

Actually, they're the only shoes I can wear with comfort. Back when I was in college, I worked at Gold Medal Sporting Goods (in Cinnaminson NJ) and learned all about athletic shoes. I spent 5 years selling those bad boys.

When my wife and I go to the outlets in Flemington NJ I usually stop in to one of the shoe stores (can't remember the name of the particular store, but it's in Liberty Village and right near the Train Station) and buy 2 pairs of 609s in 11D. I actually wear an all black pair to work and no one knows the difference between them and "dress shoes". :>)

See ya around,

Dominic

>Yeah, I am a New Balance Fan too.........nothing as comfy for my money as NB shoes! I have and use a pair of the shoe covers that Packard Woodworks sells, and I wear them every time I turn. I wear low top socks with shorts in the summer, and they work great to keep shavings out of the socks and shoes. Even with long pants, I wear the shoe covers.........keeps the shavings out of the laces, which always find their way around the tongue and into the shoes. Have you ever tried to get lathe shavings out of your socks? I have...........and I gotta tell ya, I would MUCH rather be turning! They work for me, I am happy I bought them, and I won't turn without them!

Forgive me but you need to come down here to see how turning is done with nothing that not to many that I have seen on this site or any other have done beter. You are lucky that you have shoes, please dont complain.

BTW - Purple Heart in Peru is considered junk wood.

>A late post ...but have you seen a shoe called

"Z-Coils"? My wife and I wear them - they have eliminated foot and back pain. I wear thermal socks in cool weather. Shavings aren't a problem with the higher top boot style. Looks weird works great. Cost - 2x good tennis shoes. They will fit them to your feet for free...my fit like a glove after adjustment. I have no connection or financial interest in this product - just a happy pain free customer.

>Hey Jim- that's exactly what some people say about us here in Kentucky!! Most of us do now wear shoes, and most of us also have 2 legs that are the same length!!!

>This summer, I watched George Hatfield from Australia turning in shorts with "gaiters" made from the cut off lower legs of sweat pants. The elastic band keeps them up while the inverted bottom of the legs keep chips away from his sandals. Everyone to his own taste, said the old woman as she kissed the cow.

>Hi Jim

I don't see anyone complaining. People are offering OPINIONS. Why are their (our) OPINIONS silly? Maybe a little less rum before posting time would help, eh? Of course, for the price of a few bottles of rum, you could buy some shoes - maybe even some safety glasses so no one goes blind from a hit in the face.

Curious Preferences????

>It seems that most are loath to get shavings in their shoes. Me, I hate getting them in my shorts.

I turn in wooden clogs - nice and comfy and easy to clean out. They also help when standing on the concrete - sort of a poor man's wooden floor.

Wow! 609s must be the official shoe!

Joe Pack

>With a 4E foot and a 90 degree instep, New Balance is the only shoe I can wear comfortably. The 609 is almost indestructible...I wear a pair as my light hiking shoe on my summer geology camp gig.
