Turner's Smock

Black Bear

>I would like to buy an inexpensive ($20 or less) wood turner's smock in good condition, about a size L to XL (I wear a 46 Tall Jacket) with a wrap-around velcro-type close collar and elastic cuffs on sleeves.

I do not have the money for a new smock like the one from Veritas but am getting tired of the chips going down my shirt with the lab-type smock I use now.

Any ideas?

>How about a sweatshirt? You can also learn to turn from the other side, throwing the chips away from you instead of on you. The gouge doesn't know whether you are standing in front of it or behind it. By converting pull cuts to push cuts you won't need the smock at all and your cuts will be safer. Just a thought.......

>Get an old nylon jacket, runners shirt, etc. I like material that the shavings will not cling to nor be too hot (summer will return ... I think). Add $2 worth of velcro to tighten up the collar, cut the sleeves to 3/4 if they do not have tight cuffs, remove the breast pocket (or put a flap over it) and you should be good to go.

>My turners smock is a $3 nylon shell from Goodwill that zips all the way up to the neck. Even has zipped pockets to reduce the chip load.

Spent the balance on a new chisel.

>I got one from Packard just like you describe, although I do not recall the price. It has a turtleneck collar that fastens with velcro, as well as a velcro waistband. If it fits me, it will fit just about anyone on the planet. I do not think they have it advertised on their website, but it is in their catalog, and I am sure if you called and asked, someone would be able to help you with it.

>The problem with nylon is that it doesn't breath-makes your tummy sweat! Try for another fabric if you have the option.

>Don't have a smock either, but I use a nylon windbreaker type pullover with knit cuffs and sleeves. Keeps the chips out and they don't stick to the fabric.

>I used to put masking tape over any pocket opens before I got my smock. The smock is way better.

>There are lots of options outside of a traditional smock. I've used a sweatshirt with good luck, but recently found something I like better. It's a Nike pull over with a zipper on the top half of the front, but with a tall collar. I can zip it up all the way and it helps keep the chips out. I didn't cut the sleeves off, but do push them way up out of the way when turning. Also, I only use it in the winter. In the summer, I just wear a tee shirt and let the chips go where they may :) At the end of the session, a quick blast with compressed air clears the chips and cools me off!

Have fun,

Mike

>My daughter made mine after I showed her the one that Raffin was wearing in one of his videos. It is zippered up the front, has short sleeves, and a velcro collar. It is made from white cotton and tie-dyed blue, definately one of a kind. You can use almost any short pattern and modify the collar as needed, replace the buttons with a zipper and you have a smock. My daughter said she is going to make me a new one with some changes that she has come up with, so hopefully I will another one soon. Now I have to figure out what colors I want this one. One simply must have an artistic smock if one is to create artistic shavings ... ;-) besides it looks cool..

One of our club members's wife made him a turing apron with a velcro collar. In the Texas heat, and with your studio air conditioned by Mother Nature, this is the way to go in the summer. I am going to get an apron pattern and place an order with my daughter for one of these too. You might check your fabric stores for patterns if you can get someone to sew it for you..

>I went to a uniform/medical store and got some scrubs on sale. 2 were pull over and one snapped up. The snap up has a tighter neck. Got all 3 for under $30. Chips fall right off.
