B&D battery Rebuild?? *LINK*

Mark Kauder, Phenix City, AL

>I have three battery powered tools that I use alot around the shop - B&D recipricating saw, drill and 4" circular saw. All use the same B&D 14.4v batteries - the kind that stick up into the tool, not just slide on like my 18v tools.

I have 6 of the batteries, but most are getting weak even straight off the charger.

Does anyone know of a good, reputable place to send them for rebuild?

How about replacement batteries?

Dominic Greco at home in Richboro, PA

>Mark,

Did you see the most recent issue of WOOD magazine? They have an article about the "folly of rebuilding rechargeable batteries". (Yeah, I wasn't too convinced by the article either). Have you thought about buying the "innards/guts" (the rechargeable battery section) and rebuilding it yourself?

When my Bosch 14V drill battery finally died on me, I bought batteries on-line. I found the site through a recommendation of someone here at WoodCentral. There are a number of sites online that deal with selling new replacement rechargeable batteries for a lot less than you'd pay at somewhere like Home Depot.

Later,

Dominic

>I rebuilt mine. You can get some Sanyo cells with solder tabs and build a pack. You just have to match the layout of the original pack. They are soldered together or spot welded in series. Just watch the polarity and match the original. Where the cells are next to each other, a little silicone will help glue them togther and stop any movement and breaking of the solder joints. I also use braided copper solderwick in some areas over the solder tabs to help keep them together. More from habit building flight packs for model RC airplanes.

Make sure you get cells that will take a C3 charge rate. Most of the chargers will charge at that rate and a cell that is only rated at C10 will vent and you will loose capacity. Sanyo was the best cell we could find, but there are some other brand names. Just stay away from the "consumer" batteries and go with the "industrial" grade and you will be OK. You can also go up on milliamp capacity - just don't go down. It will take longer to charge, but thet will last longer.

>Got a source for the Sanyo batteries? Approx Price?

I am starting to think that this is a lost cause - having them rebuilt, that is.

PrimeCell will rebuild them for $40 (current 2000mAh NICD or upgrade them to 3300mAh NIMH for $59 PLUS shipping each way.

I can get stock batteries NEW off Ebay for about $35 including shipping.

>I bought mine through either RC model shops or through the mailorder businesses that catered to models. You can pick up a copy of an RC magazine and find some places that carry batteries. The RC car industry also has a large number of battery suppliers, since they have a lot more electric motor powered vehicles than we do planes.
