>I'm looking at chainsaws, particularly the Husky 350 and the Stihl 260, which seem to be comparable models. Looking in the archives here, though, i'm wondering if the one Stihl dealer near me is taking me for a ride. The Husky is $299 at a hardware store here, but the Stihl is $489. Does that sound right? Are stihls just that much more? I've looked online but can't find any prices there.
>Kevin, the Stihl model that you are looking at is a "professional" model. If you were using the saw everyday then it is the one you might want, however, if you only use a saw occassionally then the Husky will be fine. Both these saws are good saws. Another one you might want to look at is the Jonsered 2149 Turbo (or equivalent new number). I would buy from the dealer that I felt more comfortable with rather than the brand because any of these saws are good.
Funny you should ask. I priced a couple of Stihls on Saturday (central Illinois, ACE hardware store). All prices are with a 20" bar. 18" and 16" are each $10 cheaper respectively. MS290 $340, MS310 $369, MS280 $419, MS280CQS $469.
>I've been very happy with my Husky 350 for weekend arbory and ripping with an 18 inch bar. As long as I keep it sharp and out of the dirt, I can't see needing anything more powerful for my bowl blank processesing and occasional trimming.
$279 + tax. I do think there's an advantage in buying from a dealer like I did rather than a big box. They're more apt to honor the warranty without making you send it off.
>The Stihl series ,I believe, has a wider blade and works better in green wood. The thin bar has more of a tendency to bind in the cut fibers. Go for the 310 and it may be a life long saw for you. The 18" bar is easier to handle than longer ones.
>I just went through the "which chainsaw should I buy" process. My new Husky 455 Rancher with the 20" bar arrived today. Can't wait to put it together and go cut some wood!
Check out www.stihlusa.com/chainsaws. All the specs. and technical info. you will need. About prices, do price comparisons on the Stihls from dealer to dealer, considering service reputation also. Most times you wiil find that on the lighter duty saws up through the 290 the manufacturer doesn't leave the dealers much room to haggle, but I just bought a Stihl 660M for almost $200 less than their normal, and that was $50 better than the next closest dealers price, and I called 4 or 5 dealers to check prices! The price you mentioned for the 260 seems rather high. Good luck.
>I just bought two Stihl 230s with 20 inch bars made in Brazil for $250 each. Finally we have something cheaper here than in the States. With them we easily chop up 10,000 bf a month of blanks.
