Oliver 2159 runout problem

Georg Waldhof

>While turning some pieces last evening I noticed that the faceplate was not running true - it wobbles in and out (parallel to the bed) as it spins. I put on another faceplate - same problem.

On the other hand, I could not see any runout on the handwheel at the opposite end of the shaft. this old lathe (1972) had a previous life in a school shop - is it possible to have two bad faceplates (acquired from different sources) or is the shaft somehow bent? I'm not sure how the shaft could have gotten bent - bearings seem incredibly tight and there is absolutely no play.

Or should this even concern me? I could not see that it seriously impacted my turning - the stem (for a chalice) was as perpendicular to the table top as it could be.

Thoughts?

Thanks

>Georg, it really doesn't matter all that much....if you install a glue-block, for example, and true it up, you have compensated for the runout. Same idea with a bowl installed on the faceplate.

An alternative method is to ship the lathe to me, and purchase something more modern.

>Hi George

It is very possible that your face plate does not seat against the shoulder of your shaft, if that's the case you either have to get a bit of the faceplate thread machined out or install a flat washer between your face plate and the shoulder.

Have fun and take care
