Vega Review Update

Mark Kauder, Phenix City, AL

>I would like to encourage anyone who liked my original Review of the Vega 2400 to check out the edited version over in the WC Articles section.

Rod Peterson edited it, and it is a 100% better article. I say this not to draw further attention to my review, but to show all of you that if you get some basic material out to the editors, these guys can really make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Rod was too modest to put his editorial by-line on it, and he deservers a huge pat on the back.

Thanks for making me look good, Rod.

Aw, shucks.

Rod Peterson -- Ormond Beach

>Really, Mark, you're going to give me the big head. One can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. One has to have silk to start with. That review was 99% your work. All I did was shuffle some things around and add some formatting that is sort of de rigeur at WC...and bug you for more pictures. It's still your work at the core.

>I have had my Vega for around five years. It looks as if they have made some changes since then.

I had to have the tail stock cut back(by Vega) to make it more stable. I had them replace the legs(hollow)with solid steel.

It came with a DC leeson motor not Toshiba.

It took me a couple of years to tune this lathe up and I think i have worked out most of the kinks.

I use the short bed hollowing rig supported in the back with a jack on an oak block. I think this is made by Oneway. I can send you some pics of the set up if you email me.

I wrote an extensive review of this lathe on the other (Google) news group a couple of years ago.

I still have some problems with this lathe but you can't beat the price and I have turned many platters and wild out of round burl on the machine.

If you can't afford better, this lathe will do.
