'ectric chain saws

>Following up on some of the generous advice given regarding wood sources, I am wondering about electric chain saws...in lieu of a bandsaw. (Iknow...but I'm doing the best I can with the space given to me)

Is a 16" bar too long? What about horsepower? I do want an automatic oiler.

I have a Jet mini lathe and although I might pick up quite large pieces I need to be trimming logs to managable size for the Jet. I need to rough cut the wood so that I can mount it on the lathe and rough turn it without destroying a bearing in the process.

I see 4 hp Muccullochs ranging from about $100.00 for a new one to $60.00 for a slightly used one. I new Remingtons at 3.5hp starting at about $60.00.

What's a good reliable, not necessarily "best" brand? I probably won't be using it more than once a month or maybe even every couple of months.

Thanks...again and again...

>After last nights pseudo bowl exercise on my Mini I am thinking of one of those too.

My neighbor has a slew of big saws that are mine to use anytime. No concerns there. But I want something for the garage and little stuff.

I'm gonna check wal-mart and lowes.

I think 16" is OK. Better too long than too short.

And then, one day, I'll get a decent bandsaw if I stick to this.

>I think you can ignore the HP ratings for electric chain saws. These things have the same kind of motors (universal) that the router manufacturers lie about. I have had one for years and it works great although I haven't tried it on any dry bois d'arc.

Things to check for

>Make certain that whatever saw you consider has a metal drive gear that pulls the chain. Some of the newer ones are using a plastic gear and they are worthless. Another thing you want is a good chain brake that actually works. I have a Husky and I can recommend it and I am told that the Stihl and Milwaukee are also good. A 16" bar should be the minimum.

>Hi, I have the Remington 3.5 Hp (the Hp is a laugh as someone pointed out to me with the formula for calculating it. I have used it for over a year and find the 16" bar to be adquate for even rather large blanks. The electrics do not have the power to clean themselves so you do need to clean out behind the guard. Not doing that for the marlon gear is what kills them. I like it for Sunday mornings in the shop which is directly under the bedroom. Remington, Poulan, and another electric are all made by the Electrolux people (the old vaccum cleaner company). For the $$ I paid for it it works great with the caveat about cleaning taken into consideration. Is not as fast as my Husky but does what I want it to with no problem. I'd stay away from used though no telling what load has been put on the motor. For $65 at Lowes though it was a good investment. There was a thread on this web page some time ago you might want to look up.. Darryl

>I went to Wal Mart and bought a 16" Remington.

I'll test it out in the daylight and let you know how it goes.

>Which ever saw you buy, have someone who is savy in running a chain saw teach you how to use it and how to sharpen it. Chain saws have maimed a lot and killed a few people over the years. They cut thru wood and bone just as fast.

Play safe !
