TD, a question

MikeinCapeMay

>Relative to Jared's question below. Since you seem to be the big bowl guy, how do you handle them in sizes over say 14"? Do you use a chuck and tailstock or strictly a faceplate for the entire operation? If you do chuck them and rough turn them, how do you true the tenon after the bowl dries? With smaller bowls I use a plywood compression to retrue. What about a bowl that's to large for the plywood compression chuck (or do I simply make a larger plywood chuck?), particularly someone without a vacuum chuck?

Thanks!

>Mike, depending on what you call "large". I start most of my big turnings on a 12" faceplate without a tailstock. I turn the outside first and then reverse and mount to an 8" faceplate to hollow it unless the wood is soft which requires a glue block with screws. For large hollow forms I do things differently. Smaller bowls, say 25" diam by 8" tall or smaller I start the same way as the big bowls but then after turning the outside I cut a dovetail and mount it on my chuck to hollow out the inside. As a rule of thumb I consider the chuck to be useful up to 5 times its expanded diameter, in other words 5" jaws for up to a 25" diam bowl of 8" height.

>Thank you Russ, I appreciate your time.

Your answer puts me in mind of a scene from the movie "Jaws". The chief saw the size of the shark and said to no one in particular, "We're going to need a bigger boat".......well with the size I want to do, I'm going to need bigger faceplates.

Thanks again for this reply and all of the valuable information that you provide.
