ANOTHER waaayyy OT: Ear candles...

BubbaBob

>OK...so now I am out doing myself in the area of weird, but I need help.

I went in a health food store yesterday to buy some essential oils for my soapmaking, and got in a conversation with the owner. Somehow we got to talking about ear candles, which I had never heard of before. He showed me one and I promptly dissected it and upon discovering it was nothing more than a tube of paraffin impregnated muslin, that had been made by spiral wrapping the paraffin/muslin (2x24) around a 1/2 x 10 1/2 wooden dowel with a taper on the end (think big sharpened pencil), allowing to cool, and removing the dowel.

Well, the upshot of it is the store owner orders them twice a month, 200 at a time, and pays a dollar each, for an item with 10 cents in materials. He owns 4 more stores, each going through about 400 a month.

I opened my big mouth and asked if he would give me all the business, 2000 a month, if I did them for 90 cents each.

Done deal...and he has friends that are in the same business and he will steer them to me.

This is way cool, except...

I CAN'T GET THE DAMN TUBE TO RELEASE FROM THE DOWEL AFTER IT COOLS ENOUGH TO HOLD TOGETHER!!!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and please...don't tell me to stick it in my ear.

>Seems to me that if the dowel were metal you could heat that just a bit so that the wax/muslin would set up as the metal cooled, and you could slip the dowel out before the wax hardened into place. >In most craft supply stores, there is a release agent that they sell for just such applications. You can probably find it in the candle making section, or where the casting resins are. Give that a shot. Another random thought is to use WD-40, or some other slickery kind of stuff.

No insurance or band-aids supplied.

Barry, I read a lot...

Google is great or sick....

Stuart Johnson

>I did a quick google search and came up with this:

ear candling (coning)

Ear candling or coning is a method of cleaning the ears and the mind, which allegedly alleviates a host of physical, emotional and spiritual ailments. A hollow candle is stuck into the ear and lit, allegedly sucking out earwax and negative energy.

The article finished with a link to and I'm no making this up..... butt candling. I decided to skip the rest of the the search.

UHMW Poly Rods - source *LINK*

Fred in NC

>Nothing seems to stick to UHMW Poly. There is no glue that works with this material. Used for molds for all kinds of fabrication. Available in convenient 1/2" x 12" rods, all you need to do is taper the end. 84 cents each. No need to spend time and money on release agents.

The rod will probably need to be a couple inches longer than the candle to be able to handle it, and to put it into a cooling rack. Rack probably 5/8" holes in a 2x4.

Sam Simpson

>Hi Y'all,

Bubba, if I where to consider this project as a factory production set up I would be using "Delrin" plastic forms. Each form would have a small hole running through, close to the tip. The forms would be ganged onto a manifold and a blast of air would release the finished cooled product.

Regards Sam Simpson.

Scott Greaves in Blackfoot Idaho

>Hi Bob,

The first thing I thought of was some kind of a release agent. But the people who use these things are very serious about the use of chemicals in their products. I just wouldn't use a release agent of any kind.

I think the best idea is to either use a form that can't stick, like the plastics, or the metal form that can be warmed up to release the candle. If I were going to make a lot of them I think I'd go with the metal forms.

I have used one of these ear candles a couple of times in the past. It was OK, but no big deal. From my reading on the subject, you can sell them for even more money by including some healing or calming herbs in with the wax, or scents so it smells nicer. I wonder how Chamomille would go over?

Is wax a by-product of your bio-diesel, too?

Scott.

Re: ANOTHER waaayyy OT: Ear candles...

#23

Well, no...

BubbaBob

>...the only useful biodiesel byproducts are glycerine, which I use in my soaps sometimes, and 75% of the methanol used, which I can distill off of the glycerine and re-use in the next batch of biodiesel.

I do, however, have 12 honeybee hives, and the beeswax can be used for more expensive ear candles...
