1/2 OT: Mfg. Bottle Stoppers

Ruth Niles

>Does anyone know how or where to find wine bottle stopper manufacturers? The chrome ones from Penn State that I use are made in Taiwan, I've done several internet searches using all the word variations I could think of to no avail.

I've also searched the Thomas Register.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ruth

>Ruth, most things (other than Harley Davidsons) that are plated and/or polished are now done in Mexico or China. Plumbing faucets, door knobs, etc have all moved. It is getting impossible for those of us who are willing to pay more for "American Made" to find the things we want. When I went to put tires on my truck last month I had 2 choices, Korea or Taiwan, unless I wanted to order and wait and pay double. Terrible what things have come to isn't it?

>I've tried the same thing. I buy them in lots of 100 and would be willing to buy larger quantities if required by the actual source. All of those that I've purchased are made in Taiwan, they all appear to be made by the same manufacturer I suspect that you've found that PSI is out of stock with no restock date. Recently I found Augum's pen works, while I haven't purchased from them yet, they are the least expensive (that I've found), Like PSI, CS and others they give an actual shipping quote on the website. Stoppers in quanitites off 100+ are 1.70 ea with shipping charges of $12.95. $182.95, significantly cheaper than any other supplier that I've dealt with. I just took shipment of 100 stoppers from another company at a total of $218.85 but will be ordering another one or two hundred next week, this time from Augum's I'll let you know. They're about $35.00 cheaper and hopefully their service will be good. We'll see.

However if you locate the manufacturer, please let me know and I'll do likewise.

>I have gone to using the silicone stoppers. I discovered that when the chrome is used in bottles of red wine over long periods the chrome bubbles. It is not unusual to almost continuly use a stopper in a bottle of red as the wine does not go bad quickly. I usually have an open bottle with a wine stopper in it. That is how both my sister and I discovered the problem with the chrome.

>Hopefully my customers do not practice moderation! After several years I haven't received any complaints, but one never knows.

Since the wine isn't contacting the cone in the bottle, I guess it's the fumes???

>Mike, JL and TD, I think you misunderstood my request. I designed a new style of bottle stopper and am looking for a manufacturer to produce them for the retail market. The retail price would have to be competitive with the existing market and American manufacturers just can't compete cost wise.

>Barbara, you're right about the red wine causing the chrome to bubble. I'm assuming you're using the silicone corks rather than the chrome with the rubber rings. I do some with cork, some silicone but the chrome seem to sell faster at the shops that sell my work. Wonder if there isn't another metal that could be used that wouldn't corode with wine fumes? In case you didn't read my response to Mike, JL and TD, I've designed a new style bottle stopper and am looking for a manufacturer to see if it's feasible for me to market them. They are designed mostly for wood turners' needs.

>I used to use chrome with rubber. They are good looking and do sell well. I now use the dowels and silicone things that slip over. No, I missed the part where you have developed a new product. I need to go back and read about that!

I never had any returns with the chrome either Mike however once I saw the bubbling I didn't use the chrome any more.

>I think it would be best to contact the overseas manufacturers through a site such as:

http://www.china.manufacturers.globalsources.com/

When I entered "wine bottle stoppers" I got 17 sources.

Careful, your design can be copied overseas very easily.

Hope this helps.

>Hi Mike,

I've located a source or two, if you e-mail me I'll share it with you and will also explain why I asked you to e-mail me. The main problem here is that you have to order thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. If you want to consider a cooperative, that's an idea, too.

>Ruth,

Although I have no idea as to the shape or features of your new design, try looking for a production machine shop with "automatic screw machine" service. Most things round with grooves and threads can be made on an automatic screw machine. I would suggest stainless steel(cres) as that is corrosion resistant and shiny enough to preclude the plating step.
