Now what do I do with it?

Jim R

>My neighbor called me about a cherry tree that was just cut down and thought I may be able to use some of for my "wood stuff" I had no idea it was this size. It is 100% green and I just hope I can do part justice to it. I hesitate to cut into these sections for fear I will screw it up. I am not really set up for handling chunks of wood this size. The pieces are 16-18" long and the bottom piece is 16" diameter. I wish someon was close enough to me, the stump that this was cut off of is about 4ft high and still standing. Any suggestions, advice, etc is very welcome

>Tell us where you live - we will even save you a couple of chunks :))). Other than that, paint it with anchor seal or many coats of latex.

>Jim, I'm expecting a new chainsaw any day now, and I'd love to break it in on some lovely cherry. How can I help you????

Nice haul! If you aren't going to cut it up yet, seal the ends so that they won't crack. I have some of that too if you want me to help! :-)

>I'm in agreement with JL, I'm sure that many of us would be glad to help! Meanwhile take a look at this tutorial by Bill Grumbine. Getting that pith out, especially in cherry, is important.

>I don't know what you are worried about. I noticed in the background of your photo there are many trees to practice on.

>Just as important as sealing the ends is move it out of the sun. Keep it in the shade.

>That scene looks mighty familiar ... is it on Newburg Rd. near I-96 in Livonia, MI? I ask this because 1) it DOES look familiar ... right down to the downspout in the background and 2) the reason it looks familiar is because -I- got the stump from the tree in Livonia.

Folks, if this is the same place ... hold your breath because there are some HUGE sycamore trees on the property that will have to come down when the city bulldozes the house on the property to build new senior citizens apartments. Oh ... and a couple of red oaks which (each) could build a nice-sized home. There is also another cherry tree just to the right of the photo with a 24" plus base and two main trunks that separate at about the 5' mark.
