Time for a New lathe

TomW in SouthJersey

>I posted a couple months ago that I had received an old Sears lathe and the banjo for the tool rest had broken. I had it repaired and have been having a great time turning wood in all my spare time. Well, the tool rest broke again last night. So its time for a new lathe.

I'm looking at the Jet 1440, Grizzly and HF comparable models. Are there other options I should be looking at? Of course, price is a factor. I find that turning bowls as well as small things like bottle stoppers has been the bulk of what I've done so far. But I would like to try hollow form vessels as well.

I'm open to suggestions and advice. A used lathe is also an option.

I too had an early 40's vintage Craftsman lathe with a broken & fixed casting when the lathe was purchased. When I broke it a second time trying to turn a large bowl, figured it was time for a new heavier one. Headed to the shop and machined one from 3/4 x 2" steel. Made it a little longer so it wasn't hyper-extended when turning bowls. Also replaced the cast plate that clamped it to the underside of the bed with a piece of steel twice as long to prevent cocking when sliding the unit back & forth. Was very pleased with the result. Took about an hour and a half. The little lathe just wasn't meant for serious turning. "Ole Blue" is gone now and replaced with a bigger lathe.

Happy hunting/repairing.....

>Tom, I have a Delta 1440 I'm selling, but shipping would be prohibitive. Of course, if your up this way...

It's listed in the Classifieds at the link shown below, and I've dropped the price and am open to an offer.

>John - Thanks for the info. It looks like a nice unit but the trip is just a bit too far for me this time of year.
