Which chuck?

Bud

>I know this has been asked a thousand times, but which chuck is most recommended? I have to buy a chuck tonite (I just broke my modified metal lathe chuck). Can someone explain if the Titan is $100 better than the Supernova 2? Is Oneway better?

I tend towards work that pushes the capacity of my lathe, only 13". I will upgrade in the next year or so so i want a chuck that will handle items up to 20" or so.

Now that its my money, I have more of an interest in the topic (naturally)

Thanks in advance, Bud

>All the name ones do the job, Oneway, Nova, Axminster, Vicmarc... and they are all roughly in the same price range. Nova probably the cheapest of the above.

Make sure the one you select has jawsets to handle your work and sufficient capacity. You also want one with a threaded insert to match your lathe so when you get your next lathe all you have to do is buy a new insert.

My preference because I own it and like it is the Oneway series. I have the Stronghold for my 20" General.

Russ Fairfield has a good article on buying a chuck in "Russ's Corner". Link below.

>The question you asked is like asking wich is better Chevy or Ford. I used a Nova chuck for years And loved it. Three or four years ago I got the chance to use a One Way Stronghold and A Vicmark 5 1/2" and a Super Nova. The Vicmark 5 1/2" chuck In my opion is the better of the three chucks. It seemed to hold the wood more firmly.

I am also sure that others here will disagree.

Alot has to do with the size bowls your turning. The larger the bowl the larger the chuck.

I hope I have helped.

Happy turning. Duane

>I have to recommend the one way stronghold. I have three other chucks and have converted all to specialized tasks such as jumbo jaw holders or whatever. Never use them to hold work anymore.

Also check whatelse you can hold with your chuck - I seldom use a faceplate anymore.

>The Tital is $100 better than the Super Nova2 and 100% biger. If all you can turn is 13" don't get it unless you are going to do hollowing. The Super Nova2 is a gerat chuck coupled with the new bowl jaws. I have a Super Nova with the bowl jaws and love it. Have turned up to a 18" platter with no proublem.

>If you are going to upgrade your lathe and want to turn larger wood, I would definitely go for the Oneway Stronghold chuck, I have one, and do mostly larger outboard turning without tailstock support, and I would not want to use any of the other chucks for that.

Have fun and take care

>I have two Stronghold chucks and have used them for the last three years, doing everything from bowls to boxes. My next chuck will be a Vicmarc, the large keyed model. I have used the large keyed Vic and the large lever operated model. They both have a better fit and feel than my Strongholds and I have some other issues with both my Strongholds. Two clubmembers have large Oneways and both use the level operated Vic. Can't seem to work a trade with either of them, I keep telling them they need a Oneway Stronghold for their Oneway 2436's and I need a Vicmarc chuck for my 24" Vicmarc lathe - so far no deal.

>You should look at the oneway talon. It will do everything you need it to do and then some. Plus you don't have to turn a dovetail tenon. Price is pretty much the same as the SuperNova2 and the oneway has proven itself.
