>I am going to be a new turner soon. I have started to buy some tools like chisels and a few pen blanks that I would like to make. I am excited to try to start with pens, small boxes, and wine bottle stoppers. I plan to buy the Jet Mini. My question is do I need to buy a seperate aftermarket chuck for turning these projects? Or will the chuck that comes stock on the Jet get me started?

>Mike, chucks are nice to have but not totally necessary. Experiment with the faceplate that comes with your Jet. The methods you will use to do work with a faceplate and a spur drive only will be of use to you all through your woodturning endeavors, even long after you own a chuck.

You'll get used to glue blocks, double faced tape, friction drives, etc... and you'll be glad.

>Mike,

You will need a pen turning mandrel to do your pen and pencil projects. I use the type that has a #2 Morse taper to fit into the headstock.

As Mike S. mentioned, you can do a lot of great projects without the expense of a chuck. A chuck does make some projects easier and faster but I will still use a faceplate and a "glue block" for some projects.

Nice lathe, I have one of the older JET mini and love it.

Enjoy!
