New new favorite tool / weapon

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Something I've been wanting to do for a long, long time, a double ended Ellsworth gouge in the heavy Kelton handle. This baby is rock solid, and I love it. One end for heavy cuts, one for slicing and finishing. Twice as long between trips to the grinder. (those tiles are 12", btw)

Would do double duty as a fine hand to hand combat weapon.

>Be very careful Mike- you will hurt some sensitive part of yourself with that double ended weapon!! You don't really intend to use it with both gouges installed do you??!!

>No, its too heavy. However, I do have a small Kelton handle with a homemade scraper in one end and a 1/4" superflute gouge in the other. It is one of my favorite tools.

If I was going to use this one I would definitely use a rubber tip around for the one not in use.

Looks cool though, eh?

>I'm probably just a ludite but wooden handles on tools just seem nicer to use.

I Know I know. The stabitlity. The extra weight (wood handles can be weighted too) the convenience - you can use one handle for all your tools.

Notwithstanding all that. (Do you have more advantages of Kelton style handles?) I still like my WOOD handles.

Darth Maul?

>Hi Mike,

That's way cool. It's just what Darth Maul would have used if he was a turner!!!

Not to infer that Mike is in touch with the Dark Side, even after that 4 legged thing that crawled out of his shop :)

Neat stuff, Mike, thanks for the pic. My kids are hugh star wars fans and love your gouge!

>John-I've been using Oneway Mastercut gouges for years and they come w/o handles. The flute profile is exactly the same as Sorby's but seem to hold an edge a little better, but I'm not convinced there is a significant difference considering the price.

>Sorry John, just saw this. You can buy them unhandled from Craft Supplies or Packard Woodworks, but the price difference is only 2 or 3 dollars. I buy them with handles and reuse the handles on self made tools. I just clamp the tool steel in a vise and knock off the handle with a hammer.
