Glue blocks and green wood?

>Do they work together? If so, what glue? I put a tool to green wood for the first time tonight (a chunk of holly) and boy, was it fun! Endless strips of linguini shavings piling up! (At least I must have done something right in the sharpening process) Haven't made anything with it cause I don't have a chuck yet and am not sure exactly how to do anything with it except turn it between centers! Do the screws on the faceplate hold well in end grain and green wood? Sigh...sure wish I could shake loose to go get a turning lesson somewhere!

I use glue blocks and wet wood with few problems. If the wood warps a lot while drying, you may have to reinstall the glue block before remounting the piece. Seldom happens with me, however. I use CA med glue.... apply lots of it! A word of warning...CA doesn't work as well if the glue temp. is under 50 deg.

I use CA glue if I'm in a hurry and Gorilla glue if I can wait overnight. Gorilla glue is stronger. CA glue can break if you have a catch. On trick to prevent this is to turn a short tenon on the bowl blank and then turn a matching rebate in your wasteblock. This makes a very strong joint.

I start all 90 percent of my bowls between centers so it's easy to turn this tenon if I need it. Most people turn tenons to fit in a chuck using the same method.

>I may go with the Gorilla glue since my shop is cold. Nobody answered my question about faceplate screws in end grain, though. I don't want a chunk of wood to come flying off that lathe!

I am seriously considering ordering a chuck and am looking at the new Nova Midi which replaces their compact.

>If you use faceplate screws in end grain, especially soft, wet end grain, they need to be long and fairly large in dia. Use self-tapping panhead screws, size 12 or larger. The length depends on the size and weight of the blank. Experience will tell you.

>John, you just beat me to it...I was going to post the same thing! It is extremely strong, and when you want accuracy, the tenon works great!

>I use wooden glue blocks all the time. I got this tip from some forum last year sometime, don't remember who or where. On green wood you can use a hair dryer for several minutes to dry the surface of the green blank. Then attach glue block with franklins titebond. It worked great for me. Titebond II is water resistant and that helps. Also I don't mind the curing time wait.

>Carol, if you don't mind the wait for the shipping, which is very reasonable you can purchase a SuperNova2 from Carrols Woodcraft Supplies in Australia for $151.. it is the cheapest I have found including the shipping... I have purchased from them before and usually get my items in about 7-10 days.... great service..

For a long time I was too poor to buy a chuck. I learned all kinds of neat ways to attach a piece of wood to the lathe or faceplate. Since I was always turning pieces with multiple parts I had to come up with unique ways to make them align. I keep thinking I should do an article on this some day. So much work so little time.

>Thanks, Tom. That looks like a good price on all the chucks after removal of the GST and currency conversion. It puts the midi at $88 US. Can't seem to find anything on their shipping rates, but I would think it would be a lot from AU!

>I used the face plate for the first time on my Jet mini this week end. I cut down a dying tree and made chips. I turned the outside of the bowl and then realized that I did not know about how to attach the glue block. It seems like you always ask the right question at the right time. My wife and I spent Christmas at Williamburg and we could have brought you a trunk load of green wood. Happy turning Wayne Cooper Charlotte NC
