Ships Wheel Nutcracker Bowl

Caleb SG

>10 3/4" x 2 3/4 (not including the wheel). New Zealand Matai, finished with Behr's Tung Oil Finish.

This is my 4th bowl ever, so helpful critique would be great.

Thanks,

Caleb

>I'm not sure where Caleb purchased his Nut Cracker hardware, but I know Lee Valley has them. The also have one in solid brass that utilizes a turned handle, and is operated more like a vertical press. I think I may have seen these at Craft Supply as well, but I know Lee Valley has them............because my Wife told me to get some! (Darn the luck, huh?) ;-)

This one came from Craft Supplies USA.

I just finished before this one a nutcracker of the letter press variety. The advantage of these types of nutcrackers over the handheld ones is that you have a lot more control over cracking the shell. This means you can get the shell off the nut but keep the nut in one piece.

>Caleb, the dish is well done and the finish looks just like a nut bowl should look. My only nit picking would be that for me the bowl is a little blocky. For my taste the bottom would begin curving in sooner and make a smooth arc down to the foot. Not intended as a criticism, just my opinion.

>Hi Caleb,

I *really* like it! I've got a brother-in-law and sister-in-law in the Navy and wish I'd seen this before Christmas! I know what their next gift will be now!

Thanks for the link to buy one as well. I like the bowl shape and finish. I think for a nut bowl you want to maximize the bowl volume and your shape seems to do that well.

Thanks for the pics,

Mike

Too many bowls, too little time in Apex, NC...
