How to remove handles?

I learned this trick from Clay Foster. Remove the handle and ferrule. make 2 slits in the handle where the ferrule was. Now put a hose clamp on where the ferrule was. You can now install the tool and remove it from the handle anytime you want.

The other ways I've seen it done will only work with certain size tools. You can use the quick release adaptor that they are now making for router bits. This is kind of expensive.

The other way is to use compression fittings for Hydraulics. Some of these will fit standard sizes for lathe tools.

>Jay,

I just removed the handle from a new Sorby parting tool I just bought (didn't like the fact that the handle was slightly askew of the blade). I clamped the tool into a machinest vise that had soft (pine) wood blocks on the jaws to protect the steel. I then used two HUGE screwdrivers to pry off the handle. It was a tough job! The tang was slightly tapered but no glue was used. I shimmed the hole and re-installed the handle. It took a bit of pounding to set it home. It will not come off easily. I could not see doing this everytime I was going to sharpen the tool.

Gouges made from round stock might be fastened to the wood handle in a different manner, I can only report on the parting tool setup.

>Round stock tools are very easy to remove. I simply clamp them in a vise and twist off the handle by hand. They are only press fit, not glued.

I mount my tools in cocobolo handles. Rough up the rod and epoxy it in the hole. When it comes time to replace the tool, I heat up the base of the rod with a propane torch. This releases the epoxy hold and then I just twist the handle off.
