>I just purchased an Ashley Isles narrow parting tool (see link). I've been told by one turning instructor to grind down the tip to make it more like a diamond parting tool to keep the tool from binding (or something like that).

Does anybody grind narrow parting tools like that? If so, how much of the tip do you grind off?

>Steve, why would you want to grind this parting tool to be like the diamond, why wouldn't the person who told you to do this just buy a diamond parting tool?

I have this parting tool (not Ashley Isles) and love it just the way it is.

>Steve:

I think the illustration attached is what he was suggesting. Lots of turners do this to their 1/16" parting tools.

It makes a bevel that is easier to keep againts the wood while parting than the cutting point being even with the bottom of the tool.

>Steve, I believe that this tool is tapered from the top edge to the the bottom. This means that it must be used as it is, or it won't work properly.

I don't think that is the case with this one. The first 2 inches of the tool, measuring from business end back towards the handle is not tapered. It is 1/16" thick from top to bottom. It gets thicker, however, beyond the 2 inches, 3/16" thick from there to the tang.

These 1/16" thick parting tools are another tool that I do not grind once I have the bevels set the way I like them. Only a couple of swipes on top and bottm bevels from point back with the diamond hone is all that is needed. They will last for years.
