Hollow Form Design Question

Steve Roxberg

>I have a maple burl blank turned to a 4" cylinder with about 8" of working length. I intend to make a hollow form along the lines of what Art Leistman does, if you have seen them.

I intend for the opening to be 1 1/4. I used a french curve and have on paper what looks good, but the base in this design is only 1". with a full 4" cylinder at about roughly 5 inches.

Will this be too top heavy?

>Steve, with the dimensions that you describe, a foot between 1-inch and 1-1/4 inch will work well. The zebrano piece in the photo is 7 inches tall in the body x 4 inches wide. the foot is 1-1/8 inch.

>Well I can quit wondering now and get to work. Wow, wasn't expecting you to answer.

My last one started out with a 1 1/4 hole, but when I was done with the nearly instantaneous design modification. That little nub/nipple in the bottom caught the curved tip, and bam, instant change.

Thanks guys.

>Hey Steve,

"caught the curved tip, and BAM, instant change"

That's one way to do a puzzle piece . . |;-}}}

>Ah yes, the puzzle piece. I'm not taking this one that far. It's only my third hollow form so I'm still trying to perfect and smooth out the creation process.

I am also trying to really start with a plan. With bowls I've always worked on the outside but don't know that I ever really had a design in mind.

I am trying to plan each piece out after it's been rough shaped.

>New question,

How to you think this will look about three inches shorter? :-)

Pictures will follow, now I know why I never have a plan first.
