Fresh Cherry Burl HELP!

Darren Brown, Tolland, CT

>Hi,

I have not posted here before but I figure you folks might be able to help me. I was fortunate enough to get my paws on a cherry burl from a tree that was cut down over New Year's. What I wanted was some of the lumber from the tree after it was milled but my rat brother-in-law didn't offer. What I got instead is this cherry burl. Now I know there's some sort of turned or carved item hiding inside of it but a: I don't have a lathe and b: even if I did I wouldn't know how to use it. What should I do? If some kind CT turner was willing to turn something for me I'd split the burl with ya (wink wink, nudge nudge). Any help would be appreciated.

>Daren, I also wish I was in your neighborhood, but I am not , so all I can offer is some advice. You should put some log sealer on the fresh cuts to prevent cracking. Looking at your picture it looks like you have a nice evenly formed burl, if it is not hollow there are a few nice bowls sitting there. You do have a couple choices. You could offer it up for sale via Ebay or some other form or you could look for a local turner to discuss the possibilities. To locate a local turner I would suggest contacting the AAW. They have a listing of their members and can look up the turners in your area. Their web site is www.woodturner.org

If the burl gets turned into a turning, please post it here so we can enjoy mother natures bounty.

>Hi Darren,

First of all I think you should upgrade your brother in law from Rat....to Mouse....that is one nice/ugly burl he gave you! Secondly, I think you should mail half of it to me right away!

>Darren,

While many would be happy to help you out, none so far are close enough to do it. Here's an idea:

Go to the AAW site (www.woodturner.org), and locate the local AAW affiliate (there's a central CT group). If you contact them, help will be easy to find. You might seek out Rick Angus, a very nice guy who would probably be willing to make something for you.

Best of Luck,

>You know that burl is essentially a tumor? and tumors can often be caused by a virus--even in situations where there has been injury?

Frankly, I don't think you should take the chance that the virus might spread--to local trees or...even your family!!

Fortunately you may have caught this infection in time. I am immunized against such rare maladies and I offer a free service...a public service, out of the goodness of my heart...to take this maloderous chancre off your hands and dispose of it--safely!

Simply melt paraffin and coat all exposed surfaces. Then wrap it up in several layers of plastic wrap, making sure to cover and seal it completely--let's not risk exposing any one else--and put it in a box and take it to UPS. I will even pay the shipping in this case...seeing as how you are at a loss as to what to do with it...and having shipped it off you will finally be able to rest easy, secure in the knowledge that you have prevented a possible pandemic of surely collosal proportions.

But it must be done soon....!!!!
